Meet Sandra Kourah of Oceanshore Photography & The Wanderlust Creative

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandra Kourah.

Sandra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been contemplating the journey I have been on both personally and professionally the past few years and I realize how much more wiser I have become, yet how much more I crave to learn and experience. I realize how much I have loved, and yet also realize how much more love I have to give and receive. I realize that all the ups were phenomenal, and the downs in hindsight, I would not have had it happen any other way. I have always been one to follow my heart, a bleeding heart as it may have been, I followed it.

I still believe there is no other way to exist but to live believing in the good in this world and the HOPE that dreams may come and the GRACE of being gentle with your own heart and soul, and the courage to live FEARLESS. To be BRAVE and take a step forward into the future WHOLEHEARTEDLY. To BELIEVE in the LIGHT & LOVE. Not tomorrow, not when everything is perfect, but now… imperfections and all. To dare to have a VISION of what you desire your life to BE. To get up every day and be GRATEFUL for this one more day, this one more CHANCE, to BELIEVE, to IMAGINE, to DARE to follow your heart, to TRANSCEND your fears and SHATTER your LIMITS….

For as long as I can remember I have always been accompanied with pen & paper and a camera of some sort. Documenting tools were my most precious possessions growing up living all over the world. As far back as I can remember there were a few things I held close to my heart… a camera, pen, and paper.

I was enamored with cameras and always giggling way too much for my Dad to capture a normal picture! But from a very young age I was acutely aware of the beauty of the world around me and the ability I had to find a smile in whatever circumstance, country, or situation I found myself in and along the way the yearn to capture and document it all whether through writing or photography. What I captured and wrote I wanted to share that with the world. Fast forward some twenty plus years, I am doing just that through my lens and pen and paper. I remember my first camera a Kodak 110 and then, my baby for a while, a film camera a Canon Ae-1.

I switched to a DSLR from film about 15 years ago at the same time I got my first MacBook because my HP had died on me. Apple has a way for inspiring creative dreams. I used a program they no longer have called iWeb and created my first website and thought to myself I can actually do this as a business… it was a moment of pure exhilaration in realizing dreams are actually within reach with enough persistence, dedication to my craft, love, and believing. I have since grown and feel like as a flower have emerged through layers of growth to bloom, however, I believe we are always growing and evolving and I continually seek inspiration and always, always, always chase the light.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The key to happiness is to see the good and the beauty around us. To FEEL the red of the earth beneath our feet, the rolling of the clouds as they come in pouring stories into our lives watering the land to bloom into unforeseen dreams. To do what you love and love what you do is key. In this day and age life is overturning and advancing at the speed of light… what makes one special and different and sets you apart? It is the ability to pause amidst the chaos, be still, listen to the wind and the trees as they respond. Feel the red of the earth beneath your feet. Be still. See and feel the story. Wonder, imagine, hope, breathe and close your eyes… then open them and… click goes the shutter.

Do what you love and love what you do, immerse yourself in the beauty of it. And that is what I do. I immerse myself in the moment, teach myself patience as I listen to the stories, the bonds, the whispers on the wind. Never once did I shoot with the intention of an award-winning shot but rather capturing that very moment where I was immersed in the story around me, a part of a way bigger picture than my mind could fathom… then the awards and the amazing feeling of pure joy of being able to put smiles in the lives of those around me happened …

The road is not easy, especially as a creative entrepreneur and an introvert I tend to have a love-hate relationship with social media. And then there are days where you wonder to yourself “am I even making a difference?” and just want to give up on it all. But I truly believe you have to follow what your heart tells you in any situation. That is innate and will never steer you wrong. Then you pick yourself up grab your camera, paintbrush, artist tools, or whatever it makes your soul happy you write, post, or show the world your heart and soul, and you look up and see the difference a smile can make in someone’s day and all of the struggle and doubts and roller coaster rides are just priceless. 🙂

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Oceanshore Photography & The Wanderlust Creative story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a storyteller. I am an artist. I am a curator of light & love through artistic visual storytelling. I am a San Diego based Lifestyle & Portrait Photographer available for travel worldwide. I am a sister, friend, daughter, auntie and doggie mommy to silly Jax.  I am a wanderlust at heart with a love of all things nature from sea to summit.  I am a yogi in training and a chaser of whimsical maladies and natural magical light. I am a lightworker and intuitive photographer working to bring forth your vision of your highest self.

Photography is not something I do, being a photographer is who I am. I live to capture stories as they unfold naturally and as they are surrounded by the natural light that dances, twirls and falls just so to help me paint true natural beauty, inside and out.

A diamond in the rough is how I see the world. I look through my lens and words come to mind, from each wave that washes ashore to embrace the grains of sand that provides me my sanctuary, to the gurgles and giggles of little angels, to the quiet stolen unseen moment between a bride and her groom as they begin their journey to forever.

My studio is the world around us. I will do whatever it takes to capture the very essence of an emotion, whether it is a stolen glance of undying devotion, a ripple of contagious laughter, a blazing sunset, a majestic mountain terrain, or a new day’s promising sunrise. I love capturing love in all its natural forms. You can find my Portrait work at Oceanshore Photography and my Fine Art at The Wanderlust Creative.

I believe in each one of us lies dormant untapped possibilities; I believe in every choice we make we can choose to tap into our unlimited possibilities and to see the world as an unlimited source of brilliance. I believe in capturing the heart & soul of your story. I believe in the art of soulful and authentic storytelling. I believe in capturing the light in your soul and the love in your heart.

I have learned that the ultimate happiness in life is to do what makes you smile because life is a gift.  Capturing stories is what makes my heart smile. To capture a moment in a photograph that will last a lifetime and beyond is something very rare and special to each individual. At the end of the day, our lives are a compilation of moments past, moments present, and of moments yet to happen. And to encompass them in a photograph enables us to treasure that moment with us forever. It allows us to pass on our life legacy and to pass on insights for generations..

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I believe luck is what we make it and 100% intent and intuition. When we remain open and believe in the light and love in this world everything becomes a miracle, even the not so good times (even though it is hard to see it when you are in the midst of the dark) I truly believe that the light will always shine… This is what has made not only my business but my soul survive through all the ups and downs of being a creative soul. 🙂
