Meet Sarah Foster of Fostering Light Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Foster.

Sarah, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started taking pictures 13 years ago when I was 8 years old, I came home from a field trip with these amazing shots, which to be honest looking at them today I’m not even sure how I got them but I think that was my parents first clue.

Then at 16 I got my first camera and started shooting for my local newspaper as the High School Correspondent, covering any and all events at Fallbrook High School. I also was the Sports Editor for my yearbook. Then I got out to college at Southern Virginia University and I began taking pictures of people and I took my first engagement photos about 3 years ago now and I absolutely fell in love with it.

I then spent the next two summers interning and second shooting with Joshua Killeen, going to weddings and learning everything I could from him. After I really started to build my business and I shot my first solo wedding and had an absolute blast. Now I am shooting weddings and engagements constantly as well as doing senior photos for many of the graduating seniors at my school. I absolutely love working with people and capturing those little moments that not everyone always notices.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been an entirely smooth road. I am a college student so I am currently going back and forth between California and Virginia which can sometimes be complicated as far as bookings go. I also when I was 18, was diagnosed with Type 1 Narcolepsy with Cataplexy. It has been a struggle to adjust to that in everyday life but as well as scheduling and long hours for weddings as a photographer. I have figured out ways to manage and still have so much fun in my profession.

Fostering Light Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a photographer, I specialize in couples photography, specifically wedding and engagement photography. My clients are constantly telling me that they love me for my timeless, elegant, warm and beautiful shots. I am most proud of where I am today, that I have managed to progress as a college student with very little funds and time and that I have become a better photographer along the way.

I think what sets me apart is the fact that I love to have fun during my shoots. To me it shouldn’t be an awkward thing to have to come and have someone photograph you, it should almost be a celebration of your love, or in portrait photography, it should be a fun and enjoyable time! I love telling my couples to do funny things because it gets them to laugh and relaxes them which makes for the best and my favorite pictures.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Personally, I feel success pertaining to my business is when I have a client tell me they are in love with the pictures from the shoot and they recommend me to their friends. I am looking towards booking more weddings each year, I think a continual growth of bookings indicates that I am doing something right.
