Meet Sarah Hall Ankerman of Ankerman Artistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hall Ankerman.

Sarah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I can honestly say that my love for hair and makeup truly started when I was a little girl. I remember going to the beauty parlor with my Grandma and my mom and just being mesmerized as they got their hair done. I would sit in my Grandmas’ bathrooms and play with their makeup and curling irons for hours. I would try on their different shades of Coty and Revlon lipsticks, trying to my perfect shade.

However, I would say I really honed in on my passion for hair and makeup artistry in college. I was dancer on a competitive Latin and Ballroom dance team while attending UC Davis. I often helped my team members with their hair and makeup for competitions, and always loved creating different looks. After graduating from UC Davis, I moved to San Diego where I pursued my love of this art form. In 2014, I attended makeup artistry school in Los Angeles and continue to always further my craft with classes. After attending school, I started working full time as the lead makeup artist for a TV news live shot station in San Diego. My work has been featured on Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, HLN, Fox Business, CBS, Syfy Network, E! and KPBS. I would say that one of the most exciting things to happen thus far in my career, is working for the Syfy network for the last three years at Comic Con. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with some of my favorite celebrities growing up, such as Amanda Schull, Casper Van Dien, Elijah Wood, Melissa Joan Hart, Ian Ziering, and Julian McMahon.

This year, I also had the pleasure of working with actress Natasha Henstridge for all of her events while she was here at Comic Con. Never in my wildest dreams would I ever imagine that I would have had such amazing opportunities. I am truly blessed to do what I love! I am truly passionate about what I do, because it allows me to build new relationships and meet people that I may not have had the opportunity to otherwise. I love that my “job” allows me to make people feel good about themselves, even if it’s just through hair and makeup. I love building lasting relationships with my clients, long after their event.

Has it been a smooth road?
I would not say that my journey has been easy. It has taken me quite a while to find where I am supposed to be. Next to the beauty industry, my other two passions have always been dance and animals. So when I graduated high school, I was pre-vet at UC Davis and worked as a veterinary technician assistant for 10 years.

While I was in college competing in Latin and Ballroom dancing, I decided to take a ProDVIDA (Professional Dance Vision International Dance Association) course, where I became nationally certified to teach Latin Dancing. Well unfortunately in a down economy (2009), dance lessons were one of the first things to vanish from people’s budget…….

Sooooooooooo here I am! Working as a full-time makeup artist, went to cosmetology school at 31 years old, after having a baby.

If anything, I want to teach my daughter (and show others around me) that it is never too late to pursue your dreams! My Papa always told me that I could do anything I put my mind to, and to find a skill that you love and be the best at it. He always believed that knowledge is power, and that is something that nobody can take away from you!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I started my business in 2013, but recently expanded my company so I could better service larger events. Ankerman Artistry is a hand selected team of talented and reliable makeup and hair artists. We specialize in services for Weddings, TV/Film/Commercial clients, Boudoir, Photoshoots, and Special Occasions. Services include High Definition Makeup Application, Airbrush Makeup, False Lashes, and Hair Styling.

Our motto here at Ankerman Artistry is that every person has their own unique beauty. We just want to enhance what is already there, while still making you look and feel like the best version of yourself. My team and I create your makeup look based on your specific wants, needs, and facial features. We don’t believe in having a single cookie cutter look for everyone!

Come June 2018, we will be adding manicures, as well as hair cutting and coloring to the hair services offered!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Absolutely! I love working in San Diego. Not only is it the perfect place to live, but its a great destination for weddings. A lot of my clients are out of towners that come to San Diego to get married.

It has been my experience that while San Diego seems large, the community is small and very supportive of one another.
