Meet Sarah Joy Schmidt of Sarah Joy Schmidt Interior Design in Escondido

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Joy Schmidt.

Sarah Joy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After graduating with a degree in Interior Design from The Art Institute-San Diego, I found my first design client on Craigslist. I did everything from choosing paint colors to space planning. I even painted their home myself!

By referrals only, I’ve doubled my business every year since, only working part-time after becoming a mother. Now that both of my kids are in elementary school, I am able to work full time on my interior design business. I still work by referral only and my projects range from kid’s bedrooms to full kitchen remodels.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road hasn’t been smooth exactly. Upon graduation, I got a very slow start in the field. I was very young and found that I needed to prove myself and earn the trust of my clients. Once I built a relationship, the rest came easy.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sarah Joy Schmidt Interior Design story. Tell us more about the business.
So for now, it’s just me. I say for now because I am getting to the point where I need to hire an assistant. I do everything from design consulting to full scale remodels. I don’t specialize in any specific type of design. I can do it all. Last year, a majority of my projects were children’s bedrooms. This year, my big projects include kitchens and bathrooms. It just depends on the year.

What I am most proud of is the fact that I make the design process affordable and easy. I can work with any budget and any style. My clients hire me because I can visualize and execute what they cannot. I do it quickly, on a tight budget and make it easy.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The interior design industry is heading in a good direction in my opinion. There are so many more options for furnishings and accessories than ever before.
