Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Pigeon.
Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I had actually never gotten acupuncture when I started school. I knew I wanted to help people but wasn’t quite sure how, so I looked into several different programs and different kinds of medicine. I finally settled on acupuncture because I went to an orientation at my school and I instantly fell in love with the medicine. It was so intriguing and interesting, and I thought being able to do this would be so great. I could help people in so many ways, and there’s so much to it that I’d never get bored. And that is absolutely true.
Every day is different; whether I’m treating someone with back pain or allergies or infertility or face wrinkles, it’s always something new from day to day. I love seeing the results. When someone tells me they’re able to run again painlessly or when someone tells me they haven’t had a migraine in three months, I get so excited. I’m so lucky to be able to help people feel better on a daily basis.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been particularly smooth, but also not terrible. Starting a business of any kind is always going to be rough, but I was lucky enough to be able to bartend while I got it up and running. Physically, it was tiring. Seeing patients during the day and then working until 4 am is a little tough, but I know I’m not the only person who’s ever done that here in San Diego and it allowed me to create my business how I wanted to, rather than have to struggle to make ends meet, so I am very grateful for that. Plus, my friends and coworkers from the bar were some of my first patients, so it helped to have that support as well.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have an acupuncture practice in Mission Valley, San Diego. I specialize in pain management and sports injury, as well as cosmetic/facial acupuncture and micro-needling. I love what I do, and I love helping people feel better. I’m most proud of my book, “Feel Awesome Everyday,” which I finished writing during the pandemic. It is a fun, basic health and wellness guide with anecdotes from my life as a bartender to my life as a Chinese medicine doctor. In my practice, I offer all Chinese medicine modalities, including acupuncture, herbal prescriptions, moxibustion, cupping, and gua sha, as well as micro-needling and facial/cosmetic acupuncture. I also incorporate nutritional, fitness and lifestyle advice into my treatments, as I now teach Spin classes in my spare time and have taught yoga and Pilates as well.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I’d have to say my favorite childhood memory is either going to Disneyworld or when we got our first puppy. Going to Disneyworld: We lived in Florida when I was young, so we went to Disneyworld several times before we moved away. I was younger than my sisters, so I wasn’t able to go on Space Mountain the first few times we went, and it was all they ever talked about, so I had serious FOMO. So when I was finally tall enough to ride Space Mountain, I was ecstatic, and I was finally able to see what all the fuss was about. It was pretty awesome, and that was a pretty good day.
Our first puppy: We had been asking forever, and one night my dad surprised us. He didn’t tell us exactly where we were going and when we got to his “friend’s” house, he said, “Pick one.” My sisters and I could not believe it, and then we brought a little puppy home who was so sweet and cute. It was unbelievable. That was also a great day and is a wonderful memory.
