Meet Sean Chavez of Pedego San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Chavez.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sean. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Chelsea (my wife) and I were looking for a lifestyle change and opportunity to own a business. I was working in education in Washington state and we wanted to move somewhere warm and sunny. My father came across the opportunity to work with Pedego Electric Bikes and open up a dealership in SoCal. We researched the opportunity and found that Pedego was ranked the number one electric bike company in the US and had a phenomenal corporate culture that focused on providing an outstanding product and the best customer service in the industry. Then we rode one and were hooked. Pedego Electric Bikes is all about fun and there is no better way to see a city than on a Pedego. Corporate wanted a new store in downtown San Diego and we jumped on it. We moved down last year to open the store and thanks to Will Strong with Riviera Real Estate we were able to land this beautiful location right on the bay.

The process took a bit longer than expected and we operated out of a pop-up tent over the summer; renting bikes to hotel customers. Just recently we completed the build-out of our new space and have moved into a full showroom. We now offer Pedego’s full line of bikes, rentals, service and accessories.

This new adventure has been life changing for our family. We absolutely love San Diego! People are friendly, the weather is amazing and we love the sense of positive community throughout the county.

My favorite part of being a Pedego dealer is the customers. They can’t help but smile when they get on one of our bikes, twist the throttle and go. Hundreds of rental customers have taken our bikes around the city with the most popular ride to Liberty Station.

We feel so blessed to be at this part in the journey.

Has it been a smooth road?
As with any new business the road has been challenging. (That’s why we put shocks on bikes right?) ;0)

The most difficult part of this new business was the timing. We moved into a new development and things take a bit longer when your first in the space. Several steps including lease negotiations, SD Port approval, city permit approval, and build-out all add up. What made it doable was working with great people along the way.

Our broker, landlords, and neighbors (Marriott Hotel and Beach Hut Deli) have been awesome. All of them have been helpful as we waited through the approval process.

Pedego was with us every step of the way. They extend their great customer service to us as dealers. We are not franchisees, but independent dealers. They treat each of us as an individual and help us with any issues that arise. There are now more 110 Pedego dealers worldwide.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Pedego is known for FUN!

I know it might sound a little cheesy, but really, our bikes are fun. When you ask a person about their experience they say, “It’s like being a kid again.”

These bikes have changed how people view and ride their bikes. Yes, you can get exercise with an electric bike, but now you have extra power to get up hills, fight headwind and go further.

It changes why you ride. Now people ride for the pure fun of riding, to go to the store, get coffee, commute to work, even take the kids to school with our Stretch Cargo bike. All of those limitations vanish when you have a Pedego.

Pedego is the leader in the industry for three simple reasons. They produce high quality products, outstanding customers service and a support team to help with any issues. Every part from every bike they have made is in Orange county, with a full tech support team to help get it fixed. Pedego has focused just on electric bikes which has allowed them to improve overall performance and rideability. Now they offer 12 models in several sizes and hundreds of color combinations. I love working with Pedego because they don’t skimp on the process. Their bikes have value and in the e-bike world, you get what you pay for.

Here at Pedego San Diego we simply love our customers. We are different because we want people to be educated about electric bikes. Several of my customers just come in to learn about the bikes and take them for a test ride. I am an educator at heart and love sharing these bikes with people. Once people discover that an e-bike can help them lose weight and manage health concerns like diabetes, go further and are fun, they fall in love. Pedego has a community culture that is fun to be a part of. From Facebook groups where people share tips and photos of their adventures to large community events like Pedego Palooza in Orange County where over 500 people showed up to ride bikes and spend an afternoon together. We love to share that culture with everyone who walks in the door. If they just have a question, want to rent or take one home with them, we are here to make sure they have a positive and fun experience.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
San Diego is simply amazing! The weather, layout and positive culture makes it a perfect place to own a business.

There are so many great things to see, do and eat in this area, and it’s only getting better.

San Diego has year-round tourism and a strong tourism association that promotes the area. In addition to tourism the locals are awesome! There is a great culture of being active outside. Perfect for the bike business. I have also appreciated the general kindness and laid-back culture of the area. People are friendly and easy going.

We looked at several cities in different states when considering opening a store. We had never really been to San Diego when Pedego mentioned it as an option. We came to visit and fell in love. Also, with everyone we talked to no one ever said anything bad about San Diego, only how much they loved it here. Now we know why.

I am most excited about the continued development of the city, especially the biking infrastructure. The city and county have taken some great steps to improving biking safety. We are grateful to the San Diego Bike Coalition and partners who have been positive advocates for improved bike infrastructure. There is a lot of work that still needs to be done but the city is moving in the right direction.
