Meet Shani James of Knowstylegia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shani James.

Shani, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Knowstylegia was born in my personal closet. Growing up in San Francisco wear vintage is plentiful and preserved, my affinity for fashion was inevitable. But it was my fiancé Ceelo Green who allowed me to explore, and set out on my journey as a vintage collector, curator, and most of all appreciator. He often adorned me with beautiful vintage pieces from various decades for red carpet events or just a night on the town. I quickly began to be known and recognized for my style and taste in unique pieces. That lead me to expanding my collection, and opening myself up to styling others.

In a very short time I secured several clients, and I was able to utilize mainly my own vintage collection which allowed me to take a personal approach to each look I executed. I’ve been fortune to work on music tours, television shows, music videos, as well as being featured at LAFW. My journey continues and I am excited to see where my next destination will be!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe that any road you travel should have a few bump and curves. It’s good to see how you handle adversity and challenges. Even though I haven’t endured many, I would say my dedication to implementing vintage into my styling has been challenging at times. It’s not always easy for someone to find appreciation for vintage or not want to be dressed in the latest designers. I often got past that hurdle by educating my clients about the history and impact of vintage on today’s fashion. It was amazing to see my work on stage or the red carpet, and get the most looks and compliments. I also think it’s better to know that you’ll be the one and only in a room of many!

Knowstylegia – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Knowstylegia is a Vintage Collection along with Wardrobe Styling Service. Decades of vintages was collected from around the world to be preserved as well as passed on to continue the legacy and appreciation for fashion. I specialize in collecting some of the most outstanding pieces and curating vintage styles seen on musicians. I am known for executing vintage looks head to toe, and that includes the coif as well. I am most proud that I’ve been able to contribute to preservation and celebration of vintage fashion. I do it all for purpose and passion, so to be acknowledged at all is awesome for me.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
For me it’s integrity. There is no compromising when your goal is the do your best and stand out from the rest. My clients must know they will get what they desire and beyond when they hire me. I stand by my work. No exceptions!
