Meet Sharon Mayberry of Rock Rose Apothecary in Murrieta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sharon Mayberry.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sharon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
A few years ago I had a health scare, after having always been in perfect health my whole life. I began turning my focus at that time to natural and effective ways of healing, and it was then that I really began to have an interest in essential oils. The more I learned, the more knowledge I craved. I began taking general aromatherapy courses and then decided to take the leap and study for my certification. I have since gone on to complete a scholar’s program and master’s classes in aromatherapy.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Yes, so far it has been a smooth, exciting road! I really expected more struggles along the way, so have been pleasantly surprised!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Rock Rose Apothecary story. Tell us more about the business.
I primarily offer one-on-one aromatherapy consulting services. I see clients in person at my office in Murrieta and also consult with clients from various parts of the country and state through phone and/or e-mail. I also conduct classes at my offices on varied topics.

Some of the more popular classes have related to “Essential Oil Safety for Children”, “Make Your Own “Clean” Cleaning Products”, and “What Are Hydrosols and How to Use Them”. I create custom essential oil blends for each client based on their specific needs and intent. Many of my clients have found relief from headaches and migraines, anxiety, depression, insomnia, hormonal imbalances, cold and flu, seasonal allergies, skin irritations, pain and inflammation, etc.

What I love most is blending for each client individually. No one presents in exactly the same way, and I always blend from a holistic standpoint.

For example, if a client has trouble sleeping, I take into consideration all aspects of their insomnia: do they have trouble initially falling asleep or do they awaken during the middle of the night? do they wake up with night sweats due to menopause? do they also have hypertension? do they wake up in a panic with heart palpitations? If blending for a client with pain and chronic inflammation, do they only need essential oils and carriers which are analgesic and anti-inflammatory, or would they benefit from the added support of CBD?

When I know the answers to these questions, it helps me look at their issues as a whole and select essential oils for their blend to best help alleviate their symptoms. It also helps me decide which delivery method is best for them, for example, a lotion, a salve, a roller ball, or an inhaler. There are so many essential oils, that I like to have as much information as possible to best blend for my client (and a little intuitiveness doesn’t hurt either!). I don’t have a shelf full of “ready-to-go” items for addressing specific needs – each client is unique, and so are the blends I create for them!

I do offer what I think of as a few “fun” items in my line; shaving soaps, facial hydrators, eye creams, lip balms, a Reiki/chakra support kit, etc. These are generally made in batches, although they can be customized as well.

With so many essential oil companies and representatives available, safety is of utmost importance to me. I choose only organic essential oils and carriers for my practice and learn each client’s health background so that each ingredient selected is safe for that individual. I am passionate about safety for children and pets, as well as the elderly (groups which need some extra care!).

I am proud to work in a wellness network as a certified clinical aromatherapist. An Optimal You is headed by Laurie Blanscet, D.O., and she has filled her office with not only western medicine doctors, but traditional healers as well. I love being part of an environment which recognizes that traditional and western medicine each have a crucial role in today’s healthcare.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Although I sometimes wish I had received my training as a certified aromatherapist when I was younger and had started my business years ago, in many ways I feel that this was the exact right timing for me. I don’t know that I would have had the confidence to start a course of study which emphasized chemistry and anatomy and physiology at a younger age, as I had always been a student of fashion and art. I definitely put myself out on a limb by embarking on this course of study, and I think age and timing gave me the courage and passion to do this!
