Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheila Clapperton.
Sheila, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I specialize in custom portrait photography in the Coronado and San Diego areas of Southern California. Even though you wouldn’t know it because my accent is mostly gone, I grew up in the Deep South. Sweet iced tea is my go-to drink even to this day. After graduating from the University of Alabama with a degree in Accounting and going on to become a Certified Public Accountant, I married a career US Navy man and have been living near an ocean and traveling the world ever since. We’ve lived overseas twice now (in Belgium and Italy) and added two boys to our family along the way. Soon after our oldest son was born, I wanted to learn how to take amazing pictures of him. I took several college classes to learn about the software used to process digital images but I am largely self-taught in the art of photography.
I had my first professional session in Virginia in 2010. Following my family’s military lifestyle, I have moved my business from Virginia to Italy and most recently, to California in 2014. San Diego has been amazing for my business. I primarily photograph families – both locals and those vacationing in the area – but my business has grown to include high school seniors, weddings, military events and professional headshots; I am also the school portrait photographer for six San Diego schools and have photographed over 4,000 students in the area.
Has it been a smooth road?
For me, photography is an art upon which I am constantly learning and improving. Certainly, as I have learned my craft, I have had technical challenges; these struggles have led to me being better able to quickly adapt to any changing environment in which I am working. Another challenging situation for me has been the need to understand how best to reach my optimal client. My learning and understanding of Google and search engine optimization has enabled me to have more success in this challenging area than when I first started my business.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Sheila Clapperton Photography – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am primarily a portrait photographer . . . families, high school seniors, weddings, military events (ceremonies and homecomings) . . . these are the areas where I spend most of my time behind my camera. In the last few years, I have branched into boutique school photography, which is a style that offers more candid and natural photographs than traditional school portraits. I am the school photographer for six San Diego schools, both public and private, from preschool aged children up to high schoolers.
I am most proud of my success in the online market, which has enabled me to reach more of my target clients.
It’s not hard to find a photographer in any area of the country. I am happy that I have developed a style that appeals to a lot of people. I find a lot of joy in knowing that when people search for a photographer in a saturated market such as San Diego, they find me, hire me to take their portraits and are immensely happy with the product I produce for them.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best: the weather
What I like least: the traffic
