Today we’d like to introduce you to Shem Gott.
Shem, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Wow, what a journey it has been! We started 5 years ago when I started making candles as a hobby. The first jars I used were empty baby food jars from my son Abraham (nickname Mr. B).
From the beginning we used plant based ingredients and friends and family loved them. Soon after starting the business we added soaps and other bath and body products to the mix.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all. One of the biggest struggles has been maintaining integrity and staying true to our original vision. My wife has been a huge source of wisdom and gives me good advice when I’m struggling over a decision. Similarly, we have based our entire business ethics off the Bible, so when we start to lose vision or allow money to cloud our minds, we can always return to that as a reminder.
When you own a business, your entire professional career consists of problem solving. This is true for anyone with a career, but even more so for business owners because there is no one to pass the big problems to. I can’t “send it up the ladder.” I’ve got to be the one to handle it. I have learned a lot and am getting better every day.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mr. B’s Necessities – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We specialize in plant-based bath and body. Even in the natural products realm, we are unique because we don’t use any synthetic ingredients at all. While most other products that are branded as “natural” include filler ingredients and some chemicals, all our ingredients come straight from nature.
I am most proud of what sets us apart, which is our customer service. We truly care about our customers and it burdens me when, on rare occasions, someone has a bad experience with our product. I am always communicative and willing to make sure any wrongs are made right.
If you had to start over, what would you have done differently?
I would have focused my vision. Although all of our new products sell very well (especially our aromatherapy roll-ons and deodorant), I would have focused on just selling candles for a while longer. Early on, I stretched myself too thin and jumped on creating the next, exciting product, rather than focusing and growing my candles.
