Today we’d like to introduce you to Freddie Harb.
Freddie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started out as a nightclub DJ (DJ Fresh One) right out of high school. At 18 years old I was introduced to the Gaslamp District by a few promoters, and my friend Chris Cutz and I were then catapulted into the top of the nightlife industry.
From there we met tons of people and eventually grew our brands. By the time others from our high school were starting to turn old enough to get inside the venues we were already at the top of our game, headlining all the major clubs in town including On Broadway, Aubergine, E Street Alley, Onyx Room, Moondoggies La Jolla, Tantra Sutra and L5, and more. I was always a studio rat, making beats and constantly working with different artists.
Eventually, I met two friends, Blest and oneson. Blest was a rapper and one son was a vocalist. We all had aligned visions and from there in 2004 decided to start a record label. It was a community of artists/record label so since we had connected all of our friends and involved everyone we decided to put out a compilation.
oneson came up with the name Sleeping Giant Music since he thought San Diego was a “sleeping giant” for music, an untapped market. It took us some time to find the logo we use to this day, all at the same time we were working on our first record. Eventually, we then put out a compilation called “The Awakening” that landed a worldwide distribution deal on our first release. We found our lawyer to this day, signed the deal and started to market this record with the distributor which helped grow the name.
Couple years later, oneson and Blest moved away, and the MP3 came out, leaving us to change courses. The DJs were doing extremely well and that’s when Mikey Beats and I decided to convert SGM into a booking agency since the record label was no longer a financially safe option. Mike came in as a partner and with our DJ money we built the booking agency and the rest is history.
In 2012 we merged agencies with Blue Moon Management, which was owned by Troy Gilmore and focused on electronic dance music. In 2016 we merged again with Angel Matos, who lives in Miami and owned In the Sound Management, a booking agency that focused more on deep and tech house.
Back in 2012, we created SGM Events, a subdivision of the agency that specifically focuses on private and corporate events as well. Now Sleeping Giant Music is a global booking agency that has many facets and is constantly growing to this day.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We did not have any financial backing we bootstrapped everything along the way. Some of the struggles for me:
1. I didn’t go to school for business, so learning how to run a company and deal with employees/HR on the job
2. Lots of deals land on my desk but determining which ones are a safe play vs. a risk
Overall been a pretty smooth ride, its a constant hustle but we love it!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Matt Spencer – Inspired me to do more than just be a DJ
Michael Jackson – Our web designer who has supported us since day one. I met him through Matt Spencer and he designed my first ever DJ business card via Matt.
Jonas Bevacqua – a huge supporter of SGM from day one. Very inspiring mentor. He used to own and created/founded LRG Clothing, which was a clothing sponsor of mine as a DJ for many years.
Kevion Stirdivant – Life coach to Jonas Bevacqua and now real estate mogul at Kase Real Estate. He gave me a 20-minute life coach call that changed my life.
Mike Beltran and Paulo Gonzalez – After Blest and oneson left, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with the company.
Chris Cutz and I landed the LRG Mixtape, we immediately had to launch the second website that Michael and I had been working on. That’s when my close friends Mike and Paulo sat me down and got everything out of my head and we built what you see to this day. That is also the time Mike became a partner in the company.
Can’t forget my family, friends and partners in the business!
