Meet Lindsay Curtis of A Smart Move in Carmel Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Curtis.

Lindsay, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Having moved 5 times in 4 years, one of which was Transatlantic, we were on the move again! And I thought there had to be a better, more eco-friendly way of moving. And as Oprah says – I had my light bulb moment!! Why not rent out clean & sanitized eco-friendly moving boxes?

I researched the internet and found out, whilst there are nationwide companies doing this, no-one was doing it in San Diego – hence A SMART MOVE was born.

Over 4 years later we have served hundreds of clients for both home and office moves and renovations, offering our clients a door-to-door service helping them calm the chaos of moving.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth yes – learning curve – definitely – struggles – uhm yes and no

Those who use our services love it. Our multitude of repeat customers show us that we are doing something right!! Educating people in not only that the service exists but how the service works & how it saves them money is the key factor in our struggles. Potential clients call – ask for a quote – and some think it’s too expensive. But I urge them to think outside the box (no pun intended!). I point out that we estimate it takes about 8 hours to find/purchase boxes, make boxes up, break them down and get rid of them afterwards – we just turn up with boxes before you move and whisk them away once you have unpacked = hours of time saved. How valuable is their time?

Secondly as the boxes all uniformly stack on top of each other, it takes less time with the movers rolling them on & off the truck – saving them about 1-2 hours of the movers time = less money spent with the movers. Hence saving our customers time and money. And don’t even get me started with the whole hygiene thing – used boxes could carry bacteria and mold – all our boxes are clean and sanitized before leaving our premises. Plus they are sturdy, no bottom falling out, have carrying handles and take about 1.5 times more than the standard box size. What’s not to like?

Please tell us about A SMART MOVE.
We are a customer lead service company – always trying to make the customer have a great experience with us.

We appreciate that moving is stressful enough and we try to take some of that stress away from our customers. So by turning up at the pre-arranged time with boxes that are good to go (no tape needed) – just open and pack your stuff away – this vastly helps. And then it forces the customer to unpack as there is an allotted time for collection which helps the customer settle into their new home much quicker. So you can say we specialize in calming the chaos of moving. I have so many stories to share of what makes me proud but I will tell you two of them here. Client A had to fight with her husband when they were moving out of their first property to use our services. He couldn’t see why they had to spend ‘so much’. However once he had experienced our magic he was converted. So much so that the second time they had to move, he immediately said to his wife – please call A SMART MOVE. So of we went to help them a second time around. On the day of their move, I got a frantic telephone call at 9am – FROM THE HUSBAND – help we need more boxes and within an hour we delivered more boxes. Talk about service!! Comes to third time they needed to move – guess who they called first as they closed Escrow?

Client B called me several times to negotiate prices but whatever I offered was still not good enough and decided to go with traditional cardboard boxes. She called me about 1 month after her move and asked me to be in her promotional video – she wanted to tell her clients that she regretted not using me and why everyone should use our services!!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Too many too count.

I have been blessed to come from a loving, traditional home with a supportive community which lay great foundations for me as an adult to have a happy marriage (22 years and counting) with 3 amazing children.
