Meet Spencer Couture of Spray Couture in Little Italy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Spencer Couture.

Spencer, before we jump into specific questions about the company, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am originally from Boulder, Colorado and my artistic path began as a young child in grade school. Being the youngest of four, I always looked up to my older brother who introduced me to hip hop and graffiti in the second grade. Inspired by the vast styles and color combinations of graffiti and street art, I would spend most of my childhood tagging and drawing; trying to emulate my love for the talent I would see in allies and abandoned buildings. Starting off as a self-taught Graffiti Artist, spray paint became my favorite medium. As my passion for art grew, so did my affinity for other mediums such as acrylic and resin.

When I turned 18, I moved to San Diego to pursue a new path and go to college. With only $400 to my name and all my belongings in the back of my car, I found a one-bedroom studio to rent with another roommate and multiple jobs parking cars in the day time and bussing tables in the night time. I eventually moved up in the nightlife scene of San Diego where I became a VIP Host for the premier clubs in the city. During this time, I continued to pursue my passion and love for art that people would eventually see when they would come over to my place and ask me where I got the paintings from. Only being known for my work in the clubs, I started doing pieces for friends and clients who were intrigued by my unknown talent. In June of 2016 I decided to show the city my talent and threw my first solo show taking over the rooftop at The ANDAZ San Diego, where I used to park cars. The turnout was successful and my art and talent was now not so much a secret anymore. From there, I threw three more shows, each one bigger than the last. In March of 2018 I opened a pop-up gallery in the Pendry Hotel located in the heart of the Gas Lamp District in Downtown San Diego.

From the success from the gallery I opened a second spot in Las Vegas in 2018 and started selling internationally. I had the amazing opportunity to partner with great names and companies such as: The Chain Smokers, Drake, McLaren, Sephora, Don Julio 1942, Omnia Night Club, and ANDAZ. to name a few.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Finding opportunities is a very challenging part of the art business. You have to get out of your comfort zone if opportunities are not presented to you, you have to go out there and make your own opportunities. When you do that you are in control of what that road has to offer.

Tell us about your company. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
I create graffiti spray paint art and also do custom art for private clients. My company Spray Couture creates and sells prints from my original pieces. These prints are sold on my website and are only produced in limited edition, 500 pieces of each. They are signed and hand pulled by me as well. There are many people who appreciate art and that don’t necessarily have the means to own an original painting. The limited-edition prints give the opportunity for my supporters and fans to own a piece of art in limited edition. I love that we are able to do that and offer something special to people who enjoy my art. I am most proud of my recent pieces because of the meaning behind them. I like to suggest meanings and leave the rest to interpretations. With the recent event of the coronavirus pandemic, I created two pieces illustrating my take on the news: Oh, Corona and When Nature Takes Over. I find these two paintings very powerful and they will forever remind me of this time we are currently living in.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Doing what you love for a living and bringing joy to other people’s lives.
