Meet Stephanie Sibley of Charter Oak Preserving Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Sibley.

Stephanie launched her career as a food artisan when she began making hand-crafted mudpies in her family’s garden at age 4. These days she uses her culinary skills to create all-natural preserves, jellies, chutneys, butter, curds, dips, and spreads. Made from the freshest, purest ingredients, each original recipe is cooked in small batches to deliver the best flavor and highest quality.

The result is a taste the San Diego Home & Garden Magazine described as capturing “the warmth and sun of San Diego in a jar.” From coast to coast and generation to generation, Stephanie’s preserves have attracted fruit lovers of all ages—from a two-year-old toddler to a teen chef and a 100-year-old-woman.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to success always has challenges. Using fresh ingredients, we are dependent on a good growing season. We’ve developed relationships with growers and find them retiring for one reason or another, their own challenges, land development, etc.

For many years our products were available at The Kitchen Witch in Encinitas, Great News in Pacific Beach where many of our customers enjoyed taking cooking classes often with some of our products being featured in the recipes. Both of those stores are part of history and we find ourselves looking for new outlets for our products. We are trying to build a presence in the market with our website.

We specialize in handcrafting artisan preserves. chutneys, Lemon Curd and our best selling Hot Pepper Jelly. Made from original recipes using the freshest, purest, all natural ingredients without added preservatives. Each recipe is cooked in small batches to deliver the best flavor and highest quality for a taste the San Diego Home & Garden Magazine described as” capturing the warmth and sun of San Diego in a jar”.

We have created a business that delivers great customer service, has delicious products our customers describe as delectable, amazing, heavenly, awesome and I need more! When entertaining for company or gift giving hey always hit the right note.

We take pride in having created a business with an authentic, philanthropic heart, the events we choose to participate in have a giving component where a percentage of every sale goes to benefit a local cause.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
To say that we have remained in business for over thirty years is a fete in itself. It is continually a learning process. We have been fortunate over the years to have a group of friends who have helped on so many occasions, labeling, selling the product at events, doing whatever we needed to get done. The saying it takes a village is so true.

Today the challenges are different, trying new marketing techniques, using social media, trying to drive business to a website is all a part of keeping current. Our best advertising has always been word of mouth.

We recently changed our packaging, it is beautiful, but the product inside remains the same
