Meet Steve Baden of RESNET in Oceanside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Baden.

Steve, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
RESNET is a not-for-profit California corporation that sets the national standards for the inspection, testing and labeling a home’s energy performance. Its main product is the HERS Index. The HERS Index for homes is like the MPG for automobiles. It provides a consumer an easy to understand guide in learning how much the home will cost to heat, cool and provide hot water.

Currently, over 206,000 homes receive a HERS Index rating across the nation from Alaska to Florida. There have been over 2 million US homes HERS Index rated since RESNET was formed. It took 20 years to have the first million homes HERS Index rated. After that milestone it has only taken 5 years to have the second million rated.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was a long and arduous journey to surpassing the 2 million home threshold. The hardest part was to educate builders to have their homes rated and for consumers to ask for the HERS Index score of a home they are considering to purchase. Another element it took over a decade to develop the industry standard and to train and certify the infrastructure of HERS raters.

RESNET – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
