Meet Steve Wyland and Annie Wyland of Battle Axe San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Wyland and Annie Wyland.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Steve and Annie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
2 years ago my wife, Annie, and I went to my parent’s house in NJ for Christmas. While there, our friend said an axe-throwing facility opened up and he was going to make our reservations and boy are we glad he did. We were instantly drawn to activity and said one of these would be perfect in San Diego.

That was 2 years ago and I was passively looking at spaces while also nervous about opening a new business until 11/1/17. I was let go from my sales job that I previously held for 4 years and after receiving that call I looked at my wife and said: “that’s it”. That’s the phone call or push I was waiting for to convert Battle Axe San Diego from a dream to a reality.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Haha, funny question. Almost everyone laughed or said no to me when I told them I wanted to open an indoor axe throwing facility in San Diego. From landlords to insurance agents they all laughed at me and didn’t take me seriously but once I showed and told them my plan they started to listen…. well a few of them.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We wanted to bring a unique but adrenaline filled activity to San Diego. I run the day to day operations while Annie handles the social media and events.

We are known for our details. We have engraved wooden toilet seats, engraved bar tops for each lane, Axperts to teach you how to throw an ax, and we have tic-tac-toe not just bullseyes like other ax throwing facilities near us.

I’m most proud of the customer’s reaction when they first walk in the door and say “wow this is amazing” because when they leave they say “that was amazing.”

What sets us apart is that we’re family owned and operated and have Axperts that will teach you how to throw an axe. Most other axe throwing places in California don’t staff Axperts so you’ll struggle the whole time and it won’t be much fun. We wanted to teach the players the different techniques of axe throwing cause there are more than just one.

We also offer catering in our party room which has a tv with an original NES Nintendo, 2 swings (yes swings), 2 tables, and you’re own private lane.

What were you like growing up?
I was always into sports and sales. Battle Axe San Diego is one of the few businesses that offer both adrenaline plus competition. Most offer one or the other but we get your heart pumping then our Axperts will organize a tournament for you and your friends to determine a Battle Axe San Diego Champ.
