Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Fellows.
Steven, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After I left the military in 1985 I knew I wanted to be in business for myself. So For about a year, I had a kitchen refacing business until the do it yourself places opened up here and basically put me out of business. But I still knew being an entrepreneur was the right road for me. My wife, Sheryl, in the beginning, though I was losing my mind she gave me room to explore what would become a lifelong passion to me.
I thought I can do a carpet cleaning, janitorial business but I would have to learn how so I worked for another company for about six months of self-training. I attended classes to learn what I didn’t know and one day just opened my own business.
I used a portable unit in my wife’s car and was on my way. Started out in commercial accounts like apartments and restaurants and this became very lucrative for my family. But this still wasn’t filling the desire I had to be an asset to my community so we branched out into residential. My wife and I decided if I was going to do this we had to plan where we would be different.
The first thing was we looked at it like we were the customer. Sheryl never liked when we were having anything done in our home she was given at least a 4-hour window for them to arrive. Then the quote she was given on the phone was never or even close to what she ended up paying. And we wanted to make sure who we used had the proper licenses and insurance. So when we moved to residential we adopted the policy of on-time appointments and trying to give as accurate a quote on the phone as we could with the information we were given. We didn’t like surprises so we tried our best not to have any of our customers. And we make sure we have the licenses and insurance for this industry. You can’t hit a bullseye every time but this is what we are now known for. We now do very little commercial work and are focused on residential where we can make the biggest difference for people. It has never been about the money, it has always been about finding a need and filling it. To bring a smile to someone and have them feel better when we leave than when we arrived.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It wasn’t always a smooth road. You run into all the challenges an owner does that most people are not aware of. We went through workers not showing up, People not home for their appointments and equipment failure. As I said these were normal. The one thing we did get hard with about 15 years ago was business identity theft on the internet. Yes, that is a real thing. Someone took over all our advertising and changed the number to theirs. We spent thousands of dollars to get on the internet where we were with SEO paid advertising and all it took was someone to hack in and change the phone number. What was a blessing is the internet leaves a trail and we were able to know exactly who did it. It took us about 10 years of court proceedings and a lot of money to get beyond that and we still are fighting to get paid. Even to this day they still have ads out there with our name and address but their number. The internet is vast and you just can’t get them all. When you have something good someone else is always going to want it for free. From that, we have learned to vigilant in our monitoring and staying on top of things and to move forward.

You’ll get them by doing excellent work. In today times we pride ourselves on being a company with ethics.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We are open to what ever direction God wants to take us. We have always put him first and never do anything without guidance from the councilors he has put in our lives. At the point we are now in our lives retirement would be nice but until we can find someone to take over with the same philosophy we have built it on we feel we can’t retire.
