Meet Steven Gray of The Control Group in Little Italy and Pacific Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Gray.

Steven has joined The Control Group as President of its online people search properties. As President, he will lead the company’s growth strategy while looking to innovate its core people finder product, extend its customer reach and elevate the customer experience.

After a long tenure and a series of increasingly responsible senior leadership roles with Harte-Hanks, he joined Money Mailer in 2007 as COO responsible for sales, IT, marketing, services and franchise operations. In this role, his main focus was transformational in nature, moving a 20-year traditional direct marketing operation into a multi-channel marketing powerhouse that supported over 30,000 small and medium-sized businesses nationwide. By introducing digital and mobile customer engagement strategies, Money Mailer was able to extend its customer reach and improve both acquisition and retention results.

After a successful PE acquisition of Money Mailer in 2010, he became COO of iLoop Mobile, transitioning the company from a pure SaaS company to a mobile marketing services leader. He oversaw sales, marketing and services and helped grow the company across new vertical markets in retail, healthcare and Latin America.

After growing the top-line revenue and creating a stellar customer base, iLoop was acquired in 2012. From there, he went on to join Peak Performance as COO and CRO. His core responsibilities were OEM management, field sales, OEM sales, marketing and account management. He led the growth of the company through new digital innovations and year-over-year account revenue increases from brands like Lexus, Porsche and VW. Peak Performance was successfully sold in 2016, and he began a successful private equity consulting practice, which led to the introductions of The Control Group’s founders, Kris Kibak and Joey Rocco.

In July 2017, Kibak and Rocco decided to bring him on as President to oversee the business operations for all company brand initiatives.

Kibak stated, “Steven has proven to be a successful and trusted leader and brings to this position a strong reputation for developing people and inspiring teams. His wealth of experience across our products will be a valuable asset as we continue to accelerate growth through our long-term vision and strategic actions. We could not be more pleased about his appointment to this critical role at this important time at The Control Group.”

“With the core of The Control Group still being centered in innovation, I believe we have just scratched the surface of what our consumer product offerings could be, and I am truly excited to help shepherd this company through its next round of growth,” He said.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey has been chalk full of ups and downs but something I have grown from in each instance. Since I have led organizations of varying sizes, managing within each cultural dynamic is always a unique challenge, especially when you are building for reoccurring profitable revenue growth. Implementing change is never easy but when you have a balance of understanding with what has worked in the past coupled with a strategic plan bought in by everyone, you can get everyone rowing in the same direction. Most struggles I have had was either by trying to do too much too soon or analyzing and planning to death that any changes were pushed out too long. Through smart strategic planning, strong executive team leadership and a measured performance improvement path, I believe I have created the right balance to effectively meet out companies goals.
