Today we’d like to introduce you to Suni Gargaro.
Suni, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I worked in the corporate world after college for sometime. After time passed, I realized working for someone else was not what I wanted for myself. I wanted to be my own boss, I wanted control of my time and create something unique for myself. So I quit my corporate job and I started a boutique in Cedros, Solana Beach in 2004 and then moved it to La Jolla. I closed that business to start a family. After I had my son Mason, I went back to retail and started an online e-commerce site in 2014 selling
eco-friendly brands. I still run that business now too. But in the back of my mind, I always knew I wanted to create my own brand with my own ideas. So,I just focused on what my passions in life was. And,one day I had an aha moment where everything just aligned for me.
I have been practicing yoga for 15 years, and I am very passionate about practicing and using the philosophy of yoga in my everyday life. My other passion was retail. I decided last summer 2017 to launch my own yoga wear called Sunia Yoga. Another passion of mine has always been kids. I love being a mom and that is and always will be my number one priority in life. I decided to combine all three of my passions about 6 months ago and brought Sunia Yoga mommy and me line to life. I launched mommy and me yoga pants to inspire kids to start practicing yoga at a young age. Here is a bit of info on that!
I have been practicing yoga for a while and I can tell you from the day I started, I noticed a big shift in my mental and physical well being. Whether I have the best day of my life or really a bad day, I use the philosophy of yoga in my everyday life. Basically, it’s about being in the present moment always.
My childhood home was in Kerala, South India and my design inspiration draws from my cultural heritage and memories. I have always loved beautiful colors and exotic patterns of India. I believe the colorful prints and patterns of these yoga leggings
not only add pizzazz to your practice, but studies have shown that color can boost your performance as well. When I launched Sunia Yoga, my intention was to bring these bold colors from India that move and motivate you – and this is the inspiration for my tagline “Color Me Yoga.”
At this point, the health benefits of Yoga are pretty well known, and the popularity of Yoga has skyrocketed over the years. But what many people may not realize is that Yoga can have enormous benefits for children. Yoga can give kids the tools to cut through the stress of our fast-paced world, to build self-awareness and inner calm. We are on a mission to inspire every child to be in the present moment, one little yogi at a time. We invite you to join us on this mission!
Now, I want to expand this vision to include our children. With Sunia Yoga, I want to get children as excited as I am about yoga. My mission was to make our patterns that are fun for kids to put on. As parents, why not lead by example? Then you can witness the magic of sharing on a yoga journey of self-discovery, health and balance, with your child. This experience is such a precious gift. In this day of technology addiction, social media, and gaming, we think yoga should be part of our children’s world, to help them anchor through reality and remind them to be present here and now.
And this is exactly what Sunia Yoga Mommy and Me line is designed to do. We can’t think of a better way to bond with your child while empowering them with tools of self-care. And now we are so thrilled to launch these beautiful matching leggings in sizes for both adults and kids. Now enjoy the magic!
Our leggings are eco-friendly, hand sewn and made in the USA. These are super premium fabric as well.
We are currently working with a worldwide children’s non-profit Org in Nepal to give back a portion of our sales. And to a national non profit foundation named Yoga Foster.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not been a smooth road. I don’t personally believe a business start-up ever runs without struggling at the beginning. It takes a lot of effort, time and dedication to bring life to your concept. Then you always have to be ready to adapt to changes. I am constantly thinking about how to stand out from the rest of our competitors. I have to tell you through the support that I have received on this journey from the day I started is beyond words. I could not have picked a better industry!
I am so grateful and feel blessed to have met some of the most amazing entrepreneurs who have inspired and motivated me to go one more step. I could not do this without them. I know you hear this a lot. But it really is true! I always surround my self with like-minded entrepreneurs and friends. They only want to see you succeed in life. It has always been so important to me. “Your vibe attracts your tribe” My other philosophy in life. 🙂
Some of the struggles I have faced, entering into a market with a ton of other brands that are established. Finding your right audience on social media is a struggle at the beginning, it takes a while to figure out what works and what does not. You need a lot of patience here.
Figuring out the right pricing for your product and finding the right manufacturer to work with have all been a struggle. But its ok, I have started other businesses in the past and I know that’s how it goes. Its a ton of learning experiences that are priceless in my opinion. I am still learning alot having my own brand. I don’t think that will ever go away. I actually treasure them and take on the challenges.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a yoga wear line. Our customers are yoga teachers, moms, kids, and people who lead a healthy lifestyle. The number one thing that I am proud about Sunia Yoga is the yogis that have given me so much support and how much they believe in our mission. We are on a mission to inspire kids to start practicing yoga at a young age. I don’t have to tell you all the benefits that yoga hold for them. Especially in this day of modern technology. Even elementary schools now are encouraging kids to start practicing mindfulness.
They see the benefits that it holds for them. Sunia Yoga is trying to do the same. We want to give kids our bold and fun color yoga pants to get on the mat with their mom. So I brought these colors to our leggings. My hope is that it gets kids to move and motivate them to practice yoga.
I think our patterns and colors stand out more than the typical basic black and grey. Studies has shown that colors lift up your mood and it helps with performance in the gym. I know when I wear colors people often smile at me and I think it helps them live up their mood. Our leggings are made herein the USA. The colors don’t fade after washes like many of the other lines out there do.
What were you like growing up?
I loved traditional Indian dancing and have performed many times at dance competitions in India. I have always loved yoga. To me Indian traditional dance forms originate from this ancient art of yoga. Also, I decided this year to get my teachers certification as well from yoga alliance.
Growing up in India we were always outside playing with friends, eating a ton of fresh fruits and veggies right out of the farms. Back then everything seemed so organic.
Now everything has changed. I want to get kids off these devices and encourage them to move more and be more in the present moment.
Our philosophy of Sunia Yoga, Healthy Bodies/Healthy Minds.
