Meet Courtney Mitchell of The Swank Studio in Oceanside

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Mitchell.

Courtney, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been a creative type. From an early interest in musical instruments to a constant yearning for crafts and DIY projects, I always knew I wanted a job that reflected my creativity. I started my journey as a hairstylist over 12 years ago, and couldn’t be happier that I found my calling. That being said, my early years of getting my feet wet in the industry came at a time when I was still learning about myself as a person and what I wanted out of my life. I am a California native, however, opportunities and friendships had me living in Seattle, Maui, and back here to North County San Diego to satisfy my yearning for seeing and learning new things. Turns out, it was the lesson I needed in work ethic, adaptation, learning how to be resilient.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road, but nothing worth achieving is ever easy, right? Since I moved around a lot, I was in that “starting over” phase multiple times. As a hairstylist, that means long hours on a commission-only basis. No clients means no money. It forced me to think of ways to market myself and make something happen instead of sitting back and waiting for everything to fall into place. I now have a fully booked clientele and a 2-week waiting period, and it’s crazy to think how far I came from those slow times.

What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a hairstylist at The Swank Studio and have been there since the owner opened the doors almost seven years ago. I specialize in custom color, and tape-in extensions. I am proud of the organic way our salon has turned into a family, with both employees and clients. We are supportive of each other, never competitive, and genuinely have fun doing what we love. Having the skill to do this job is obviously important, but the customer service, and the relationships we build without clients really escalate everything to the next level. We also are passionate about continuing education and always learning new techniques in order to offer the best and most current styles to our clients.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success, to me, is finding what you love, and being able to support yourself while doing it. As long as I still enjoy what I do and it pays the bills, that’s all I need to feel like I’m succeeding.
