Meet Taina Danahy of Healing Our Heroes in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taina Danahy.

Taina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My name is Taina Danahy, I am the co-founder and current operator of Healing Our Heroes in the San Diego Office. My business partner and co-founder Melissa Thiel operates our East Coast Office, in Marietta Georgia. We founded HOH in November of 2016 becoming a 501(c)3 non-profit on December 27th, 2016. HOH specializes in Neurofeedback Therapy, a training tool to help heal the brain naturally, non-invasively, and without the use of drugs or medication. I had been working in corporate America for 10 years and never felt satisfied, I know I had a great purpose to help people who suffer.

See, My husband suffered from extreme PTSD, depression, anxiety, and insomnia for years after he had served 12 years in the Marine Corps, serving a total of 5 deployments overseas, with tours to both Iraq and Afghanistan. Brad was a Rifleman for the infantry divisions. He saw and experienced things that no human in this world should ever have to, but it was his job and duty to fulfill the missions. He did what he had to do to protect himself and his Marine brothers and sisters (many of whom never returned home).

Upon coming home from the war he was honorably discharged from the Marines and tried to find his place amongst civilian life. He started to have major problems internal struggles that were not seen during the service to many of us. Even though that time in our lives was one the toughest and most challenging, it was we as a family needed to help him start to rebuild his life. We had to start from scratch.

That’s when Melissa Thiel, a dear friend from my elementary school days, stepped in and gave my husband the hope he needed. Melissa will forever be our earthly angel. Melissa owns and operates a Wellness Center out of Marietta Georgia that specializes in Braincore Neurofeedback Therapy, her center is called Be Wellness Center. Melissa comes from a long line of military family members as well. Her step-dad and dad both served in our armed forces along with her brother.

Unfortunately, Melissa lost both her father and stepfather to drug and alcohol abuse both having had to fight their own demons alone from their time in service. A daughter should never have to lay her fathers to rest because they had lost hope. Melissa was determined not to let that happen to our family. That’s when Melissa and I decided we had seen too many members of our armed forces getting lost in the crowd with nowhere to turn. So many men start to self-medicate with alcohol and drugs, and masked their emotions by not speaking, seeking help, or reaching out to anyone. My husband was on the path to destruction and had Melissa not stepped in, I am certain my husband would have been another number that we would lose to Veteran Suicide. My husband completed our neurofeedback program in 3 months and is doing wonderful.

He sleeps through the night, he plays with our little girls and our marriage is improving each day. He has not taken any medication or turned to alcohol in over two years. The change that Neurofeedback was able to accomplish has restored his life. We were able to re-train his brain to start to heal itself properly and taught his brain how to overcome all the Neurological symptoms that come with PTSD. My husband is a great asset to society, and will always be a hero continuing to heal each day.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The non-profit world is never easy. Funding is always an issue and spreading the word about Neurofeedback Therapy will always have to be at the forefront of our mission, along with consistently raising PTSD, suicide, and financial contributions awareness to people in the community.

How our program works is simple: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder does not just go away with time or medication. The brain operates in a constant fight or flight state until it is taught differently. Healing our Heroes provides cost-free neurofeedback brain training therapy to help retrain the brain to overcome symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, depression and many other neurological based symptoms. This, in turn, allows the Veteran to make the change from within.

Through state of the art technology, we are able to help correct some of the functionality of the brain through a non-invasive, natural, homeopathic method of Neurofeedback Therapy. We are the brain trainers (gym trainers for your brain). We see where areas in your brain aren’t as strong as others, and like they say, you are only as strong as your weakest link. Our goal is to strengthen those weakened areas. This helps Veterans maximize their processing abilities so they can live a happy and healthy life.

Please tell us about Healing Our Heroes.
Healing Our Heroes is a 501(c)3 non-profit founded here in San Diego, California in the Fall of 2016, but we also have a sister office in Marietta, Georgia. We specialize in Braincore Neurofeedback Therapy. We are (gym -trainers) for your brain, we help assist in strengthening areas of the brain that are not working at an optimal level. In the almost two years we have been up and running we have serviced well into the double digits of Veterans, Active Duty, Retirees, and Reservist all at no cost to them, and providing the kind of help so many desperately need, especially the service members not looking to be on medication.

Our goal going into the third year is that we are financially able to double the current number of Vets that we treat every three months. (8 Veterans to 16.) It’s hard to say what set’s us apart from others. We never really like comparing our non-profit to others, as all of us are in this together just trying to make the world we surround ourselves with better. But, Melissa and I have a saying that we try to live by. “We may not be able to change the world, but if we can change the world for one Veteran, Mission Accomplish.”

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t believe I would start over, every cry, sad, stressful, happy, laughing, the excitable moment that HOH has had been all so worth it. When you receive an email, text, or call from a Veteran, spouse, father, mother, daughter or son, saying their particular Veteran is doing so well and they just want to thank us for our program. It makes you get back into the office the next day and keep working towards those next goals to save Veterans and their families lives together.

  • To see a Veteran for a QEEG is $350 dollars
  • The Neurofeedback Therapy can run as little as $2000-$5000 depending on the severity of the case.
