Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Mooney.
Tara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve wanted to be a healer since day 1. Honestly, if it was more of a mainstream career path, I probably would have joined the holistic health community a decade ago. I remember going to the local massage school in High School because that was all I could afford and I became hooked. As a former swimmer, with repeated Rotator Cuff injuries, I have first-hand experience of what touch, stretching, and massage can do to reduce inflammation and to speed up recovery. As I continued my journey, I found Vinyasa Yoga in 2008 and started teaching soon after. Yoga is great for injury prevention and helps me maintain a calm mind and open heart.
In 2015, I made it a goal to combine my teaching and my background in Marketing with a Massage Certification and start my own business in Alternative Medicine. I really enjoy Deep Tissue, Sports Stretching and energy work, mainly because I see almost immediate results through these balancing modalities. My company is named after a Cranial Sacral term, Midtide, which refers to the time healing begins in a session. Bringing massage to the masses is a daily joy for me. I love to make non-believers into regulars and to help them identify the root cause of their pain. This makes every day new and exciting. I am very grateful to have an opportunity to practice my craft in this beautiful and inspiring city.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I really enjoy working with clients new to massage and yoga and getting my message out to this part of the community can be hard. Most have never received a professional massage before. There is a lot of educating that goes into working with these clients and investing in this type of self-care is new to them. Because of this, finding work/life balance can be hard. I try to stay as flexible as possible, by quickly responding to requests and to be available for same day appointments. This requires me to be constantly on my phone and appointment calendar. However, I feel so lucky to have this business, it has been an absolute pleasure. I can’t thank my loyal clients enough for choosing me to work with them regularly.
Midtide Massage – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in deep tissue, sports stretching, Trigger Point Therapy and energy work including Reiki and Cranial Sacral Massage. I see a lot of benefit in Cranial Sacral massage because it relieves issues in the neck and jaw that result in chronic headaches, TMJ and other injuries resulting from whiplash. I don’t think there is enough awareness of the dangers of TMJ when left untreated, the uneven wear patterns and pressure on the teeth, joints, upper neck, and cranial sutures can have very damaging long-term effects. From my experience as an athlete, I know that chronic muscle pain mainly stems from tight muscles creating dysfunctional movement. Bringing awareness to the importance of stretching can really benefit a client’s daily routine. I am proud to be able to provide a drug-free solution to chronic pain.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My goal is to always have a full schedule, but enough time for individual attention. The ultimate goal is to have happy and pain free clients, who are able to identify what is causing their pain, and eventually need fewer sessions. There is no better feeling knowing someone has a better quality of life because of massage. The greatest compliment is getting referrals and word of mouth business. Success is having enough time and energy to do the hobbies I’m passionate about, while still running a thriving business.
