Meet Tara Sauvage of Sauvage Private Label

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Sauvage.

Tara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started as a footwear designer after I graduated from college. I was working in Los Angeles and then I got into handbag and belt design after a few years as a shoe designer. I can draw anything and I had a good eye for trend and color so I got jobs easily by word of mouth.

We ended up moving to Seattle during the Great Recession so I ended up doing freelance design when I was living in Seattle. The Funny thing was that most of my clients were in Los Angeles.

In the past five years, I have lived in the beach area of San Diego. I have had a few full-time jobs but I continue to do fashion design and consulting for various clients in San Diego, Los Angeles and also Tel-Aviv. I would say that 90% of my business is a referral or word of mouth.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As far as fashion design and production goes I have not had that many struggles. The biggest struggle is when I have wanted to start my own fashion lines, then I struggled with getting the projects funded. However, when it comes to designing leather goods and production I can basically do it with one eye closed. It does not stress me out.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Sauvage Private Label LLC is a full-service fashion consulting firm. I specialize in design, trend research and production. I can provide services through the first sketch through final production. We specialize in handbags, footwear and men’s leather goods. I prefer not to design apparel but I have done that lately. I have a great group of factories and suppliers that I have been working with for years so my support team is great. If I cannot do it myself I hire it out.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up on a farm in Washington state. I was very shy and worked outside in the fields and helped care for livestock. I also got fashion magazines at the store.

No one in my family ever gave me anything for free so I always worked hard. I remember the first time I got some money as a gift from an older person when I was well into my adulthood. It was hard for me to accept because I always had to earn every cent. I did not really know what it was like to get free gifts.

I left home at 18 years old and have been working ever since. I like working as its part of my identity. If I am not busy then I get kind of like an identity crisis and almost go into a depression. I am such a creative person I absolutely have to use it on a daily basis.
