Meet Tawnee Gomez of Urban Shindigs in La Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tawnee Gomez.

Tawnee, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My childhood was not the same as most, I was raised by multiple family members, and bounced around to different homes and homeless shelters. Growing up I was always trying to escape by being creative. I loved to draw, paint, build, and design. During high school I was determined to change my past and redirect my future path. I spent most of my time in a 3D art class, sculpting and working full time as a retail store manager at the nearby mall. After graduating I decided to pursue a degree towards fashion marketing. Not sure where it would take me but I knew I wanted to work in a creative world weather it was in art or fashion.

After graduating FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) in 2009, I began working at UCSD (University California San Diego) where I still work today as a Project Analyst for the Executive Vice Chancellors Office. About two years into working at UCSD I began to miss that creative world. That’s when weddings found me. After helping a few friends design and plan their beautiful day, I quickly realized that this was my passion. I had always worked and went to school full time so adding on a side business to my full-time job was easy. I knew it was going to be stressful but I was up for the challenge. Going into the flooded wedding industry I knew I had to stand out. Being a marketing major, this was not hard, but I wanted to stay true to who I was and to ensure I reached the right client. Urban Shindigs is not your traditional wedding/events company. We like to stray away from traditional and create an event that really captures the person.

Urban Shindigs is now 5 years old!

2 years after starting my own business in event planning, I noticed a marketing need in the wedding industry. I met so many talented vendors that had no online or social media presence. Since I built my own site and had a degree in marketing, I decided to help entrepreneurs build memorable and successful brands with an online presence. That’s when I started to make launching websites for small businesses easier.

This coming year I will be turning 30 and am very excited for the next chapter.

Has it been a smooth road?
Every entrepreneur experiences different obstacles / challenges. My biggest challenge was learning to say NO. When you begin a career, or start a new business you seem to think you can do it all. Let me tell you burnout is real! When I first started Urban Shindigs, I wanted to say yes to every request, client, and collaboration.

But after saying yes to many times, I found myself in tears, burnt out, and overwhelmed. Ever since I began saying no to things that didn’t fit my brand or didn’t feed my creative soul things have been much better.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Urban Shindigs story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in ‘thinking outside the box’ and bringing your ideas to life with our own creative spin on what ‘traditional’ should be. We cater to the dreamers and help tell love stories the way they should be told. We believe each party or wedding should represent the couple or individual. Black is our favorite color pallet to work with.

We started this company to feed our creative souls and help lovers tie the knot. We genuinely love LOVE and are so fortunate to be a part of people’s special days.

Urban Shindigs is on to another chapter. We are not exactly sure how or when but we do plan to begin doing more charity based events to help homeless youth, families, and children.
