Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Carpenter.
Taylor, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In April 2014, I came up with the idea of making chalk bags as a passion project to learn how to sew. My grandparents gave me my first sewing machine for my birthday and after 3 1/2 days I made the very first STATIC chalk bag. My local climbing gym, VITAL Carlsbad, was the first gym to carry my chalk bags and all the bags were hand cut and sewn in my house in Oceanside.
In March 2015, we moved into our first official office and I began training someone to help me sew the chalk bags and in 2017 we are in over 30 climbing gyms and started selling our chalk bags and buckets in REI. This gave me the opportunity to hire another seamstress and learn the in’s and out’s of how to scale a company from cutting fabric on the kitchen table to learning how to use industrial sewing machines and creating the best team I could have ever asked for.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s never a smooth road, but learning how to deal with the struggles are how I have been able to grow as an individual as well as an entrepreneur. I can look back and appreciate every struggle I have gone through because now I am able to handle so much more thanks to some valuable lessons along the way.
My biggest challenge has been to learn how to be a good boss and how to manage a team that is excited to come to work everyday. My goal is make a work environment that people want to be in and a team everyone is excited to be around. Finding the balance has been the best struggle and lesson in making not only a successful business, but also giving others the opportunity to have a less stressful work day and a more to pursue the things that they are passionate about.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Static– what should we know?
STATIC is a rock climbing company that specializes in handmade chalk bags and chalk buckets. We use a variety of different textiles and collaborate with different artists to create some very unique designs in which we sew in our studio. We take pride in working with local shops and keeping everything from the prep work to the sewing in house.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Since I first came up with the idea of STATIC, there has been one guy that has been there cheering me on the whole time and that is my boyfriend, Duncan. He now helps me run the company full time and I would definitely call him the other half of the backbone of the company. Lauren and Maria are my two incredibly skilled seamstresses are always there to go the extra mile. The fact that I have such an amazing and talented team is really why STATIC is what it is today. My family and friends are always inspiring me to be creative and push myself as far as the sky will let me go.
