Meet Taylor Gallegos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Gallegos.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m a muralist/studio painter/live artist living and working in Carlsbad, CA. I’m originally from Boulder, Colorado. I’ve been drawing and painting since I could walk. I took my first art class in my senior year of high school, and it was a perfect fit. I went to school and received a BFA with a double concentration on Drawing and Painting. During college, I studied abroad in Tuscany, Italy. I moved to Oceanside 7 years ago. I have lived in the hills of Fallbrook for the last four years and have just moved to Carlsbad, which I’m really excited about.

Since graduation, I’ve been making and selling artwork, creating murals and doing live art. I’ve been developing my studio art in terms of different series moving between varying levels of abstraction and surrealism. I have done live art in public venues like music concerts, weddings, and charity events. My murals have developed throughout the years, gracing the walls of businesses, schools, homes and more.

Please tell us about your art.
I make paintings at different scales, sometimes on canvas and on walls of buildings. I use acrylics, oils and interior, and exterior wall paint.

I love using different areas of the color wheel to build out the image bit by bit. I have developed a process that works for me where I work in the mid-tones early on in the development and push to the brighter bolder colors toward the end of the painting. The final moves are the deep darks and the highlights. This time and energy put in makes sure that everything feels and looks the way I feel it needs to.

The content of my artwork is a reflection of the content of my life. I love using philosophy and a sort of personal spirituality in my artwork. I express feelings, ideas, impressions and questions in my work that I work through in the process.

The message of my work is about connection, love, peace and this common experience of reality that we all share. We are all living life on this planet as a human, and because of that, we share a common bond. We all have the same desire to survive and thrive. We all are born into these bodies and leave them one day. My art speaks to the deeper truths of our existence in this dimension that we’re in, pushing us all to look past the insignificant differences between us all and the surface level minutiae that crowds our daily lives.

I hope that people are left with the sense of awe that I have for these lives that we get to live on planet earth as we fly through an ever-expanding universe. I want people to connect with a deeper part of themselves and feel a deeper sense of gratitude for the opportunity we have to be alive.

I want people to know that my artwork is an experiment. I strive to be authentic and original in every moment of the creation process. I am committed to excellence in staying present and putting my practice and training into action. I’m 100% pursuing my life as an artist and plan on doing so until I’m done with my time here.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I feel that success as an artist is defined by each individual artist. I define it for myself as the commitment to the time, energy and the process as well as growth in terms of my reach, my effect on people and my sales.

I would say the most essential quality or characteristic for an artist is grit or perseverance. With this, one can learn anything, develop any technique, create anything, and figure out how to survive. Our limits only exist within ourselves.
