Meet Taylor Hollenkamp of BarreBody in Pacific Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Hollenkamp.

Taylor, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After college, I moved to Chicago and took a fast pace, high pressure job in finance. I’ve never been a fan of big gyms, but needed something to alleviate the stress from my job. I discovered barre classes and was instantly hooked. Integrating regular workouts into my life transitioned into a passion for everything wellness, including nutrition, holistic practices, and keeping my body as healthy and fit as I possibly could.

After about a year into this new healthy lifestyle, I decided that I wanted to own my own barre studio and spread my love of health and fitness with others. I opened my first studio in downtown Chicago in 2011 and loved every second of it. Transitioning from a full-time job in finance to entrepreneurship seemed so natural, and working for myself, in an industry I am passionate about, was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Fast forward 4 years, and four long, cold, Chicago winters later, and I was ready for a change. Southern California had always called to me, and this Midwestern girl was ready for the next adventure. I sold my Chicago studio and moved to San Diego with no car, no job, and only a one month sub-lease on a tiny apartment right on the beach. After 6 months of living in San Diego, I found BarreBody in Pacific Beach and the business was actually for sale! I met with the owner at the time, and moved forward with buying the studio from her in April of 2016.

Since my takeover of BarreBody, the business has grown exponentially and I am looking into opening another location in 2018!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The transition has been relatively smooth, since this business and my previous studio are very similar.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about BarreBody – what should we know?
BarreBody is a total body workout that incorporates callisthenic exercises, several props, and the ballet barre. We use low weights and isometric movements with high repetition to create long, lean muscle tone. We are an independently owned and operated studio, so clients feel like friends here. We regularly communicate with our members to see what they love about classes and what we can do to continuously improve their experience at BarreBody.

I couldn’t be prouder of the success stories I’ve heard from our members. We have members that have lost tons of weight using our method, and also members that aren’t in it for the weight loss, but to tone up and feel strong in their bodies. Anyone that comes to class here and feels better when they walk out of the door makes me beyond proud to do what I do.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My success comes from genuinely caring about the people that choose to spend their hard-earned money at my studio. The competition in this industry is fierce, and giving people a stellar workout, where they see and feel results quickly is just a piece of the pie. I know most of our members by name, and when you patronize a business that remembers you and cares about your experience with them, it makes a huge difference.
