Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Sanchez.
Taylor, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My story is a little windy, but all that matters is I got there, right? My senior year of highschool, I was set on my dream job of being a wedding dress designer. I was so into that industry I knew it from the inside out. I went to school at Palomar Community College to earn my AA degree in fashion design. As I went through the courses, I started to realize that I actually hated sewing. I mean, I was good at it but I didn’t like sitting for hours creating the piece, which is the whole point of being the designer. From there, I switched my degree to fashion merchandising. That’s when it all clicked. I was sitting in a styling class and I realized that I loved that aspect of fashion. I loved that everyone has a different face shape, body type, even different colors look different on people. I then decided to take it a step further and go to beauty school.
After a few years of different jobs to save up, I found myself starting the Cosmetology course at Bellus Academy. I spent a year there learning everything I could and getting close with other creatives and mentors. As I was starting to get close to my graduating day, Bellus paired me with Atelier Aucoin Salon & Studios for an internship. I spent every Saturday for eight weeks with them and I fell in love with this industry even more. Everyone that was there welcomed me with open arms and were so willing to share their knowledge with me. They were the ones that really inspired me to be in this industry. If I remember correctly, it was about my 3rd or 4th week there and they were already talking about bringing me on as an assistant. Talk about a dream come true, right?! I loved the location, right by the beach in La Jolla, and I loved the people. I truly felt this would be a place I would not only be excited about waking up and going to work, but I would love the people I would be surrounding myself with.
About a year went by and I was close to becoming a booth renter. I was going to have my own business, my own clientele and be as creative as we wanted to be. Unfortunately, in late July of 2019, I was involved in a horrible accident. I rolled my car and then was struck by another. Landing myself in the hospital with two fully broken legs, a collapsed lung and 14 other broken bones for three weeks. Without a doubt, those months have been the hardest months I have ever had to endure. I had to leave Atelier Salon to rehabilitate at home. I took this past year to really reflect on who I am and where I am going in life. I still loved doing hair. I still loved meeting with new people. I just wanted to celebrate love. I found myself back in the wedding industry, except this time for hair. And that is when Hair by Taylor was born.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has been short of smooth. When I realized I wanted to pursue hair, I didn’t have nearly enough money saved up to pay the school tuition at Bellus Academy. Bellus was the only school I wanted to go to and I wouldn’t settle for less. I knew that I would get the quality education I deserved. I had a ton of odd jobs along the way, like working at Staples, Moonlight Amphitheatre, I became a manager at Target and the local Radisson. Eventually, I had enough to start. My boyfriend (now husband) had agreed to help as well. We moved to Poway, close enough to walk since I didn’t have a car at the time. And I started my career! That and paired with my most recent year, I think it’s safe to say that this road has been very bumpy. But to me, this was all worth it.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am currently a Wedding Beauty Consultant, which is basically a fancy term for a wedding hair and makeup artist. I travel to my bride’s location to help get them and their party-ready for one of their most special days while I do specialize in weddings I do hair and makeup for all other events as well. Such as proms, graduations, photoshoots, etc. Since I am a styling specialist, I am known most for my updos and all-around styling. Even though I am mostly styling now, as a business, I am working towards opening up my own salon so I can get back to cutting and coloring full hair time as well.
I take pride in my attention to detail and communication with my clients. I do everything I can to meet my client’s individual needs and I take their concerns to heart. When planning a wedding, it can be very stressful, so I do everything in my power to help and answer questions as much as I can. I am constantly going to classes and courses as well to continue bringing the best for my clients. It is important for brides to know what the trends are and how to help your client look their best. I think that is what sets me apart. I have always been told by colleges and clients how I seem to soak up knowledge like a sponge. I strive to bring my best to my clients so they can bring theirs!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I would have to say. It would be overcoming my hardships from this past year and starting my own business. I have worked very hard to get to where I am today and I am so proud of what I bring to the table. I wouldn’t know what I know now without this experience and I wouldn’t know how to help others that reach out to me for guidance.
