Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa LoJacono.
Thanks for sharing your story with us, Teresa. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Sound good. I’ll start off by giving you the short, fast, sweet version of my journey so far. I grew up on the Central Coast of California with my crazy big family, fell in love with photography at a young age, moved to LA for undergraduate, said goodbye to CA and left for graduate school in NYC, stayed for 6 years and had the time of my life, eventually got tired of the cold and now I’m back in the sun learning about bike life and consuming as much Salt & Straw as humanly possible. Ice Cream is by far my favorite food group.
Living behind the camera is my way of life. Discovering the darkroom and working in a wet lab was a huge moment for me. It shaped my passion and character, turned me into an artist, and brought me to live in one of the most amazing cities in the world. It’s rather incredible that a simple object can bond people and bring them together. From day one, I’ve approached my work from a photojournalistic perspective. Transitioning to a “commercial” side of photography, it was important to me not to lose the style/techniques I built up through my studies in traditional imaging. My eyes look for the in-between moments. Capturing real moments and the oddities and uniqueness of simple encounters as they happen in front of me. Those moments are exact memories and tell an entire story.
Originally a documentary//fine-art
Looking back at all this now is making realize what an incredible journey I’ve been on the past 20 years. It has opened door after door, and sprouted opportunity after opportunity. Photography has put me on the ride of my life! And I can’t wait to see what happens next.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think the biggest challenge for me was not only starting a whole new business from scratch but making sure I didn’t lose my vision and style as a documentary photographer when transitioning to a genre of photography that is somewhat more commercial and refined.
