Meet Thomas Annese of Rekinect Therapeutic Massage in Sorrento Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Annese.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My massage therapy career started when I was politely asked not to return to the college I was attending at the time. A.k.a getting kicked out of college at 22. At that time I had never even received a professional massage. I attended an open house at The New York College for Health Professions to see what they had to offer. Tai chi as a required class caught my attention. I mean how bad can a college be if they have everyone meditating, right? I enrolled into the program and never looked back.

After I graduated in 1999 I worked for a year on Long Island, NY before moving to San Diego, CA. I arrived in San Diego on January 15, 2001 with no job lined up and $400 in my account. I worked as a barista in the early morning and did massage in the evenings to pay the bills. Once I established myself I dropped the coffee house gig to focus full time on massage.

After working at the same office for 6 years I bought out one of the owners and jumped into the wide world of entrepreneurship. I would equate the experience to taking a hot shower and the hot water cuts out. Shocking to say the least. I knew nothing about how to run a business or manage employees. Oh and I forgot to mention that I purchased the business one month before the economy took a nose dive in 2008. Just about the worst time to write the biggest check of my life.

After 5 years running that business I split off to start another office, Rekinect Therapeutic Massage. I wanted to have an office that was exclusively focused on the therapeutic aspects of massage therapy.

I survived the financial crisis and in 2013 I open my second massage therapy office. Rekinect Therapeutic Massage was created because I saw as an unfilled need in the massage therapy industry. Rekinect was developed with the idea of crossing massage and physical therapy into one. I now have a strong following of awesome clients that I really enjoy working with. I get people who are struggling to just function day to day because of repetitive stress injuries. I help them get back to living life not just surviving through it.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a challenging journey with the financial crisis of 2008 being the first hurdle to clear. When money gets tight massage is one of the first things to hit the chopping block in a budget. I survived and grew during that time which was one of the biggest challenges I have faced so far.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Rekinect Therapeutic Massage exclusively focuses on the therapeutic, rehabilitative side of massage therapy. I specialize in repetitive stress injuries, auto accidents, athletes, migraine sufferers and anyone suffering chronic pain syndromes.

My 18+ years of hands on experience sets me apart from other massage therapists. I estimate that I have completed close to 10,000 hours of massage and there is no substitute for that. I have developed a level of knowledge about the musculoskeletal system that enables me to quickly assess and treat the conditions my clients are presenting to me.

I am proud of being able to consistently help clients that come to me in pain and get them back to living life without chronic pain.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
San Diego is absolutely a great city to be a massage therapist. It is competitive but there are few other cities in this country that have so many physically active people that are interested in receiving regular massage therapy.

If you are just starting out as a massage therapist make sure that you understand the average income of a massage therapist nationwide is about $22,000 a year. It is definitely higher in San Diego but not that much if you are working for someone else.
