Meet Todd Sparks of Performance+Plus Physical Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Todd Sparks.

Todd, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in the rural Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts, Todd spent many hours and days in either of his mom’s two private practice physical therapy clinics. Whether home sick from school or no babysitter available, Todd often roamed the clinic following his mother, talking with patients and playing with gym equipment. In high school and college, Todd continued to work as a physical therapy aide in the very clinics he grew up in. It was no surprise Todd chose to follow in his mother’s footsteps and become a physical therapist himself.

After graduation from college in 2005 and with the dream of one day opening a clinic for himself, Todd moved from the cold mountains of Western Massachusetts to the warm sunny beaches of San Diego and has worked for a variety of companies over his 12 years on the west coast. Throughout this time, with time restraints and productivity requirements, Todd struggled to be able to provide the quality of care he knew his patients deserved. Todd felt patients were more than just a number and that in order to provide the time, empathy, passion and high-quality treatment they deserved starting his own private practice was the only option. In 2017, Performance Plus Physical Therapy was born!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are many challenges that come when starting a business from the ground floor up, but if you are dedicated, determined and have a passion for what you invasion, you will persevere. There were lots of up’s and downs throughout the 6 months I was preparing to open and there were times, I said to myself “this is why not everyone opens their own business”, but I stayed positive and worked through the struggles.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Performance Plus – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.

At PPPT, we provide evidence-based, patient-centered care to return you to work or play as quickly and cost-effectively as possible. Our team has advanced training and is constantly working to stay up to date with the latest research and techniques in order to provide the very best care possible. Upon your initial evaluation, a thorough exam will be performed in order to identify the underlying condition responsible for your symptoms. We want to treat the problem and not provide a “band aid” for your symptoms. Once your underlying condition is identified, we will establish a complete treatment plan as well as a home exercise program. Your participation is essential to the process. At your subsequent visits, you will always receive one on one manual hands-on care by a licensed physical therapist. Our goal is to return you to your normal lifestyle as quickly as possible

We use a variety of treatment approaches including Manual therapy, or manipulative therapy, is a physical treatment primarily used by Physical Therapists to treat musculoskeletal pain and disability; It most commonly includes soft tissue and joint mobilization and manipulation with a variety of techniques including active muscle pumping, active release technique, instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization and cupping.
Modality Therapy

Modalities are used to relieve pain, improve circulation, decrease swelling, reduce muscle spasm, and deliver medication in conjunction with other procedures. Typical types of modalities include cervical and lumbar traction, electrical stimulation/TENS, ultrasound, cold laser, heat and cold.
Evidence-Based Exercise

Exercises based on relevant, high-quality clinical research that have a proven track record of success will be taught and perfected to provide our patients with a better quality of life

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We plan to grow on clinic in Chula Vista and within the next 2 years, expand the company and open 2 additional locations. We will also be adding Aquatic pool therapy at our Chula Vista office.
