Meet Toni Camacho of Moongazing Herbal Apothecary in Mira Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Toni Camacho.

Toni, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all started with my love for nature and natural medicine, Natural healing and herbs have been my interest and passion almost all my life. I began studying herbs and natural medicine when I was a teen. Even at that young age I was attracted to any literature that I came across related to both topics and read anything I could get my hands on. Even though I was fascinated with all-natural forms of healing, I was enchanted with herbs and their effect on people, I’ve seen medicinal herbs successfully treat conditions pharmaceuticals barely touched. Herbs have captured my spirit and I knew I had found my life work.

On December 2004, a year after my son was born, I was diagnosed with severe adrenal fatigue. Adrenal fatigue can wreak havoc with your life. In the more serious cases, like mine, the activity of the adrenal glands is so diminished that you may have difficulty getting out of bed for more than a few hours per day. As this condition progresses every organ and system in your body is more greatly affected. Changes occur in your carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism, fluid and electrolyte balance and heart and cardiovascular system.

Although, this syndrome has been known by many names, such as non-Addison’s hypoadrenia, sub-clinical hypoadrenia, neurasthenia, adrenal neurasthenia, adrenal apathy and adrenal fatigue, conventional medicine does not yet recognize it as a distinct syndrome. Therefore, medical doctors were not able to help me.

Instead, I was told that there was no solution for this condition and I had to live with it for the rest of my life. Not being a person that is known for quitting that easily, that moment inspired me to take action and take ownership of my health. I figured, if I can’t heal, at least I can feel better and enjoy my life. So I turn to the knowledge I acquired over the years and I started applying several concepts of natural medicine to my life, including nutrition, herbs, energy medicine, personal counseling and much more.

Throughout my journey to health, I had great teachers, friends, and books that taught me how to listen to my intuition and brought me back to nature. I learned about the mind-body connection, the power of compassion and how the food we eat and the thoughts we think affect our physiology. I also learned that the standard American diet destroys your health, accumulated stress damages your health, exercise is an essential part of life, as well as having fun and laughing. It took almost a year to heal my body, and I did it with herbs, a whole food nutrient dense diet as well as meditation and connecting deeply with people. More than a decade later, I am healthy and happy. You would not even suspect that I had suffered from adrenal fatigue. This experience has taught me so much about taking care of myself, live my life to the fullest and the importance of compassion and connection with others. I’m convinced that I had to go through these experiences so I would be able to empower people to be healthy. That is why I have defined my life purpose as “To use my passion and love to empower and support people to be healthy and to fully love themselves, so they can live full, happy and loving lives for the good of all living beings.”

While conventional medicine was unable to help me in this situation, that doesn’t mean that I do not support or believe in Western medicine. I believe in an integrative approach to healing, a world where both modalities co-exist and work together to help a person heal. Humans are very complex creatures, we are multidimensional beings. To me, we need to take into consideration all aspects of the issue that a client is presenting. See the pathology from a Western and Traditional medicine, as well as address the condition from both perspectives.

I don’t believe in incurable dis-eases anymore; like Louise Hay states – “Illness is an invitation to change your relationship with yourself for the better.”

There is always opportunity to heal. I believe that you can, by taking some simple and inexpensive measures, such as taking good quality herbal supplements, watching what you eat and what you think, can extend your life and your years of well-being.

Moongazing Herbal Apothecary – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is composed of 3 areas: I have an online business where I sell herbal supplements and all-natural skin care products designed by me. What sets my products apart from other is that I only use ingredients that are fresh, 100% natural and free from chemicals. We make our products every week in small batches, using recently-obtained high-quality organic ingredients. That is why you are always guaranteed a fresh product.

The second part of my business is my health and wellness consultations, in this area, my approach to is holistic and transpersonal. In my work, I integrate the principles of eastern and western nutrition, herbology, energy medicine, Buddhist mindfulness and personal counseling to assist others in working through their physical or emotional blocks to attain optimal health. I also, design custom herbal supplements made to match exactly each of my client’s needs, following this philosophy I have had a tremendous success rate with my clients. Herbal supplements really do work and are highly effective, but only if the ingredients are organic and given in the right quantity.

My main goal is to help people heal and be happy. I truly believe that organic and quality products do not necessarily have to be expensive. That’s why part of my company’s vision is to make affordable organic products accessible for all. Even when clients come to the clinic, I try to adjust prices for them so that everyone can afford get healthy. For me, it’s not about using this business to get rich; it’s about sharing my experience and knowledge to assist other’s live healthier lives.

The last section of my business is training, I teach courses about herbs, natural health and how to reach your goals and be successful.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, if you are happy and content with your life and your relationship with others you are successful. It really does not matter how much money you have; how big your house is or how expensive your car is. All those things do not matter if you are angry, stress, depressed, ill or sad. I’m not saying material things do not matter, they are important and they sure make your life easier and sometimes more enjoyable. What I am saying is that if you are not happy and content now, those things are not going to make you happy once you acquire them. You have to learn to be happy regardless of what you do or do not have. When I worked with people in hospice at the end of their lives, no one ever said to me I wish I would have worked more, made more money or have a more expensive car. Instead, everyone wished they spent more quality time with their loved ones and enjoyed their lives more.

I feel like I’m the most successful on the days when I am feeling: gratitude, love, joy, appreciation, passion, enthusiasm, eagerness, and positive expectation, the more time I spent feeling this way the more I attract positive things into my life, including the material things that I want. Therefore, my goal in life is for each day to do whatever it takes to feel this way. It is now a game for me, when I get upset, I see how fast can I get back to that state of mind because when I am there everyone wins, including me.
