Meet Trailblazer Alissa Todd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alissa Todd.

Alissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, money was never talked about in my family – it was a taboo subject and just never discussed. I remember believing that it was rude to talk about money. What I did know about money is that it can buy experiences and travel as my family really valued traveling. I was fortunate enough to grow up in The Netherlands and Ireland and my family loved to travel every summer – as many Europeans do. Like many people, I wasn’t taught about finance or money as a child and wasn’t even aware of the Wealth Management industry until I was at San Diego State University.

From a young age, I knew that I wanted to do something in business as I grew up with a businessman father. At SDSU, I enrolled in the Aztec Mentor Program where I got connected to my first ever mentor in my industry who is now an advisor at our firm. He really showed me ropes, gave me insight into what it takes to build a business, how you can truly make a difference in clients’ lives by bringing clarity and a strategy around their finances. At this point, I knew that I wanted to pursue this career!

I started interning for a portfolio manager at a Fortune 100 company and then launched my career as a Wealth Advisor at The Wealth Consulting Group where I act as my clients’ Personal CFO. I decided to partner with one of the Managing Partners of the firm, Mike Woitkoski, who has been a great business partner and mentor since 2016

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Can any entrepreneur say that their journey has been smooth sailing?! It’s been a rollercoaster ride and I wouldn’t trade it for the world! Some of the challenges include keeping up with industry changes and making sure that you are constantly evolving and improving. Sometimes, it can also be tough not to compare yourself to other entrepreneurs so it’s important to understand that everyone is going at their own pace. Nobody tells you the tough parts of entrepreneurship including the countless late nights (while your friends are out at happy hour), sheer exhaustion which you have to push yourself through, making big scary financial investments into your business and inevitable rejections. The important part is not to let any of those things keep you down. Remember your purpose and keep going! I am grateful that I get to wake up, be passionate about the business that I am building, serve my amazing clients’ and help them pursue their financial goals.

For women just starting their entrepreneurial journey, patience and consistency are key. Building a business takes time, LOTS of hard work, occasional tears and consistency. Don’t be afraid to take risks and delegate as much as you can so that you can stay in your zone of genius. If you don’t already have a mentor, I would highly recommend reaching out to role models within your industry or joining organizations that provide mentorship. Having supportive and successful mentors has been hugely important in helping me get to this point in my career.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Wealth Consulting Group – what should we know?
We act as our clients Personal CFO to identify and help them pursue their financial goals. We do this through a comprehensive financial planning process and investment management. I specialize in working with young professionals, women and millennial business owners teaching them to use money as a tool to live a life they love.

One of the reasons I decided to join Mike’s team at The Wealth Consulting Group is because we have a relationship with LPL Financial which is the nation’s largest independent broker-dealer.* This allows us to recommend almost any investment and insurance products that are available on the market and truly act as a fiduciary for our clients.

I’m really excited to share that we pride ourselves on diversity at The Wealth Consulting Group! 35% of our advisors are female which is HUGE for our industry that is a predominately white male. We even won a Diversity and Inclusion Award from InvestmentNews in 2018.**

Another thing that sets us apart from many firms is that we offer investment portfolios available that aim to align your investments with your social and environmental values. This type of investing is called Sustainable or Socially Responsible Investing and it serves a dual purpose of pursuing competitive returns while making a positive impact on society and the environment. It strives to align your personal values with your investments. And women and millennials are leaders in this space!

*As reported by Financial Planning magazine, June 1996-2018, based on total revenue.
**Award based on nominations by a committee of InvestmentNews representatives and judges for nominees that have fostered diversity and inclusion within their own firms, among clients, or within the financial advice industry as a whole.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
It can seem challenging to be a woman in a male-dominated industry, but I’ve come to realize that it is actually a huge advantage! There is an increased demand for women financial advisors so for anyone who is thinking about entering this industry, I highly recommend it. This career, while it takes many years of hard work and pure determination, can offer a flexible work schedule to fit the lifestyle that you desire for yourself. Women also tend to want to work with other women especially when it comes to finances so women advisors are even better positioned.

The financial consultants at The Wealth Consulting Group are registered representatives with and securities offered through LPL Financial, Member FINRA/SIPC. Investment advice offered through WCG Wealth Advisors, a registered investment advisor. WCG Wealth Advisors and The Wealth Consulting Group are separate entities from LPL Financial
