Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Garrett.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At the young age of 13, I was gifted my very first DSLR from my mom, for Christmas. From the second I unwrapped that box, and got that camera into my hands, I felt an immense amount of possibility and opportunity unfolding for me. I was able to learn how to manually operate my camera from professional photographer friends, and began honing in my skills and creativity the best I could, with friends and family as my subjects. When I turned 18, I officially signed my contract with the navy, and was shipped off the following year. 4 years, 3 duty stations, and 2 kids later, the Navy brought me to San Diego, with my camera still glued to my hands. I decided to professionally pursue the one passion that hasn’t left my sights, or my heart, which brings me to now; capturing beautiful moments between amazing people, and generating love and happiness for myself and my clients.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s never been a smooth road, particularly because I am my own worst critic, and it’s difficult separating yourself from the rest, in such a saturated, and female-dominated market (which is amazing).
My greatest struggle was finding a client base and finding like-minded women who want to create amazing content together.
My advice is to find your tribe; find a group of women who share your ideas, your drive, and your creativity, and create with them, respect them, and support them the way they should support you and your work.
We’d love to hear more about Radiant Life Photography.
I am a homecoming, maternity, newborn, couples, and portrait photographer, who also creates content for bloggers; that’s a lot right!?
Mainly I’m known for my maternity and newborn photography I think. I hate limiting myself to a certain style when I’m passionate about all types of photography, so I try to create content for my main specialties.
What sets me apart, is that I am more than a photographer. I’m a mom, wife, and active duty sailor. I can connect with military wives and husbands, I know how to capture their love and longing because I’ve felt it too, and I know what it looks like, and I know how to personify it in my work.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I feel the biggest barriers are the feelings of competitiveness, instead of feelings of camaraderie as women. We’re too busy trying to cut each other down, rather than supporting fellow female entrepreneurs in our industry, and in general.
