Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline McCandless.
Caroline, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been intuitive and empathic. My mom, aunts, and grandmother played intuitive games with me and really fostered acceptance and connection to my self and my spirituality. My early childhood was rather traumatic and chaotic outside of this bubble, though, and I was taken to the doctor for stress symptoms at age seven. Anxiety and depression danced around me until I fainted from panic attacks and drowned in suicidal depression in my late teens and early twenties. On the outside, I was outgoing, active, and optimistic, but inside was an incessant battle with myself.
I slipped deeper into my unhealed past emotional wounds. I was always active and enjoyed sports, but my weight finally ballooned to over 220 pounds. Clinically obese. I was obsessed with my dissatisfaction with my body. I didn’t know how to stop the pattern I was in though. These ups and downs had become my “normal” and I was settling for it. Finally, I was so low I realized the only way to get better was to face the darkness that was overcoming me. At the bottom of the bottom, I had nothing to lose when it came to committing to self-healing and so the real journey began.
It didn’t happen overnight, linearly, or without doubts and a lot of fear along the way, but I climbed out of the hole. I looked at shadows in myself that were uncomfortable. I took responsibility for my life and how I felt in it. I was in a women’s meditation group led by my mentor that I ended up leading years later. I had my “monk years” where I was almost solely dedicated to emotional and energetic healing. I meditated and journaled for hours a day sometimes. Over time, I lost over 60 pounds without dieting or restricting myself, but in that time I devoted myself to a diet of authentic and unconditional self-love. My body physically let go of what I no longer emotionally carried. Out of this, my own spiritual practice and my intuitive wellness coaching was born. I now teach self-healing practices in 8-12 weeks that took me half a lifetime to cultivate.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been smooth, but what adventure is smooth? Discomfort is the environment for growth, and I’ve had many opportunities to grow. Besides from making my own intense journey to get here, my early experience with business had bumps and obstacles. The first time I tried to get a group for one of my programs, it fell apart and I was heartbroken. It took me time to get the courage to even try again. I’m still learning to navigate this road and new skills that I knew nothing about, like marketing and sales. I don’t expect it to be perfect but I will
always do my best, whatever the best I have to give at that moment.
We have this illusion that everything is supposed to be linear and easy all the time, and yet the greatest things rarely happen that way. If you are not confronted with obstacles or discomfort, you are not challenging yourself and you are not growing. Too much struggle and we won’t grow out of overwhelming, but small challenges build confidence, innovation, and ability. It may be a hard pill to swallow, but you are not here to have an easy life full of entertainment. You’re here to have an innovative and impactful one, even if the only people you are impacting are your immediate circle. That ripples out.
My advice is to follow your heart. Fear is not a good enough reason to not follow your heart. What kind of life will you look back on if you decide to choose your fears over your passion your whole life? Learn to shift your perspective of struggle as an opportunity to grow. Life is working for you. Nature is constantly struggling to grow and evolve and so should we. Do not limit your vision. Always stay open to the signs and flow of life. Sometimes the thing we never even imagined ends up being the answer we didn’t know we were looking for. And lastly, be your own hype-woman, and do the same for the ones you love. We all have a hard enough time overcoming our limitations in our own minds. We don’t need to be adding to others’ battles. We don’t know how our actions will ripple out, so create a ripple you can be proud of.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about MakingOM – what should we know?
My Em+Fit (emotional and physical fitness) program is an intuitive wellness program I designed focused on our relationship with our body, our weight, and our health inside and out. Through the program, clients identify the blocks or sabotage they’ve had in the past with weight loss or fitness plans. We shift those to a place of loving the body, and we incorporate tools to process emotions and energy out of our system instead of staying stuck in the body and manifesting as conditions like excess body weight.
I give free consultations for any of my services. My work is part of this next wave of healing and I’m happy to answer questions or speak on these topics. I offer individual Intuitive Readings, Guided Meditation Circles, and Intuitive Wellness Coaching.
My work is an integrative approach to healing, which includes mental rewiring, physical training (for certain programs), some basic nutrition re-education, spiritual/higher-self connection, and empowering emotional processing methods.
I label my work “Intuitive Wellness” because I provide a safe space to learn and create a wellness practice that feels intuitive for you and your life. I tell all of my clients that when our time together is over, I want them to be able to walk away knowing they can reach me but don’t need me. The point is to make people self-sufficient so they have the ability to heal themselves for the rest of their life. It may not be the best business model, but it is the only way to create healthy individuals who truly own their power.
We have been fed this misbelief that when X happens, when X person comes in, when X goal is achieved, then everything will be better. But what about right now? Repeating the same pattern over and over again will only bring the same result. Most people don’t actually want to settle for less or the same, but they don’t know how not to, and they have yet to be shown a better way. My work is helping people learn a better way to live, as stated by one of my clients.
