Meet Trailblazer Christine Sterling, M.D., FACOG

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Sterling, M.D., FACOG.

Dr. Sterling, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been an ObGyn for seven years now, but it wasn’t until my daughter was born in 2017 that my job became a mission. Despite all of my knowledge and desire to be ready for postpartum, I was woefully unprepared. It was on one particularly difficult night, when my daughter was just a few weeks old, that I decided to dedicate myself to improving the preparation and support for postpartum. For five years before I became a mother, I had treated birth as the destination of pregnancy, not seeing what was right in front of my eyes– the destination is motherhood. When we honor and support the developing mother in pregnancy and postpartum we provide the care women deserve.

Has it been a smooth road?
It took 16 years of higher education and practice to become a board certified ObGyn. It was a long road and it was challenging beyond measure, but it was straightforward. Work hard and get the reward you are after. Motherhood came along and laughed at my accomplishments and my “goals.” Motherhood has been both humbling and empowering. It has added more to my career than perhaps anything else.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am an Obstetrician and Gynecologist who believes to prepare women for motherhood and support their transformation, we need to honor their Mind, Body, and Heart throughout the reproductive journey. We must see our health and happiness in the context of our whole selves.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Be yourself. Listen to yourself. Don’t look for shortcuts. If you are paying attention, they will come into your life.
