Meet Trailblazer Christy Golder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Golder.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started on my photography journey over 10 years ago when my husband gifted me my first camera. I fell in love with the way photos could make me feel and still can’t get enough. Emotion and connection is what makes an image capture you and give you all the feels, I wanted to share that gift with others. I’m self taught through hours and hours of youtube videos, small photography classes here and there with lots and lots of practice. I’ve gone through so many failures and continue to grow and learn from others in the business.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted or thought about giving up, but I couldn’t imagine NOT doing this, that kept me going. I’ve played the comparison game over and over and have been faced with so many obstacles that have made me question myself.

Lack of funds, lack of knowledge, lack of time, lack of social skills (true introvert) but I didn’t let that stop me! I’ve been shooting on a cropped sensor camera for the past 9 years and just bought my first “professional camera” (full frame) one year ago. I struggle big time with computers and technology, I can upload photos and edit just fine but websites, html, all that other stuff….. I need help.

I’m also a stay at home mama and have been for over 5 years, let me tell you it is not easy to balance. My family comes first but also showing my kiddos what it looks like to work hard for something you love is so important to me, there’s a lot of late nights, early mornings and thank the Lord for preschool. I have had to put myself out there more times than I’ve wanted but at the end of it have made so many amazing connections, friendships and job leads! If you can find something that fills your heart and soul, don’t compare, don’t give up and always give yourself grace.

We’d love to hear more about Christy Golder Photography.
I mostly shoot families with little ones, there’s just something so special to me about capturing the connections and especially with little ones how they are right now, through each age and phase of their childhood. Babies and kids grow and change so fast, as a mom myself I want to remember and have a way to hold onto those precious years. We all have a story to tell and I am drawn to that way of photographing, I always tell my clients to just be themselves, interact, play, love and less posing. Some of my favorite images are candid, kids especially just want to do their own thing and I encourage that during my sessions.

On another note, I have also been shooting boudoir over this past year and have fallen in love! There’s something so captivating and beautiful about a shoot dedicated to celebrating and loving on yourself as a woman. My heart and passion is to encourage and inspire women to be their best selves despite all the pressures of society and to value how one of a kind and uniquely special we are.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
You have to put yourself out there and out of your comfort zone in order to grow. I tried to do this for years without anyone in my corner, besides my supportive husband and family, it wasn’t until I started attending rising tide meetups or going to a workshop or planning and collaborating with others that I began to see changes in the right direction. Find someone whose work inspires and motivates you, never copy or replicate exactly what they are doing, instead use their work as a way to drive you to better yourself and your business.
