Meet Trailblazer Debra Alison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debra Alison.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Debra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m a photographer, but what I do is so much more than that. I’m cultivating a community to promote self love and empowering women.

Like everyone else, I have always struggled with my self image and insecurities. I’d look in the mirror and see all the ways I was never enough, not once growing up did I feel comfortable in my own body. This wasn’t an isolated feeling once I started talking to friends. Can you believe that? It’s the worst feeling in the world being uncomfortable in your own skin and yet so many women and men are plagued with these thoughts. When I became interested in photography, I just knew I wanted to empower women to love themselves a little more. Media sets such unrealistic standards, especially for women! My boudoir photography focuses on women the way they are, it’s organic, raw and honest. It’s all about celebrating YOU right now.

The outdoors have really guided me in my own journey towards self love so you will see that in a tremendous portion of my work too. A majority of my boudoir sessions take place outdoors, but also photography adventurous elopements and adventure sessions.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of my biggest fears that I still struggle with now is that even after all these years I have insecurities, that maybe I’m not good enough. I also struggle with depression and I speak publicly on mental health in my boudoir group. Most of these obstacles stem from stigma, which is why I’m doing my part to diminish. Being a creative entrepreneur also has its own set of challenges, but there is a great community out there to reach out for advice. Struggles are just a fact of life! This makes you human and relatable. Your power is in how you respond to the challenges that present itself!

We’d love to hear more about Debra Alison Photography.
I am a photographer specializing in organic outdoor boudoir, adventurous elopements + intimate wedding photography. I capture the rawness of people who love.

My boudoir photography is intimate lifestyle portraits that tell a visual story of women who dare to love themselves. Couples, engagements + elopements are just two people who are madly in love with each other and want imagery to express that special feeling. Adventure + Lifestyle sessions are people just doing the things they love, whether it’s documenting an outdoor adventure like backpacking the PCT or capturing your daily morning yoga flow.

Boudoir has always been my heart, I’ve always been drawn to the empowerment of women. It’s not your typical boudoir, it doesn’t always have to be sexy lingerie. It’s about feeling fucking beautiful in your own skin.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
Women have always faced barriers in the workplace, that glass ceiling is very real. I work with women exclusively, so sometimes, I feel I have an edge there. There are plenty of people who can’t take my job seriously though, as if this is child’s play or a hobby and nothing infuriates me more. My clients are some of the strongest women I know, who have expressed to me how much their boudoir sessions have affected them. It’s a powerful shift when you see yourself in a different light or finally see yourself as the amazing person you are.
