Meet Trailblazer Dejenia Boyd

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dejenia Boyd.

Dejenia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My son was diagnosed with autism at the age of four. I decided to quit my job and be a stay at home mom/ wife. One day, I signed up for a Wilton cake decorating class at the local Michales craft store. My love for cake has always ran deep. I’m the person who went to parties just for the cake. I took three out of the four classes. Then, I started self-teaching and taking online classes on Craftsy. Design and being creative is my passion. I went to school for fashion design and marketing so cake design wasn’t too far off. For two years, it was a hobby, then I began to take the steps to make it a business. I ran into a lot of design trail and error but worked really hard to perfect my craft and now, I’ve had the pleasure of doing cakes for celebrities.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all!!! Lol. When I first started I had to figure out how to balance being a mother of a special needs child, having two younger children, being a wife and trying to work from home. To be honest with you, sometimes, it’s still a challenge but I’ve gotten better at it. Another struggle was income. I did maybe 1 or 2 cakes a month. But once my work improved, so did my business. My advice to young women starting is: first, know your worth and charge it. A lot of times, we don’t give ourselves enough credit and we low ball ourselves. The more you put into your craft and skills will show keep perfecting yourself. Trust your passion and journey. Sometimes, it may feel like things won’t change continue to push through. I promise it will.

We’d love to hear more about Sweet stacks Cakery.

It’s the personal experience I provide my clients, the drive to impress and exceed every clients expectations and lastly, no one leaves with a cake their unhappy with.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Watching my mom. She’s a very self-motivated and driven person, always pushing through any obstacles in her way just to make a way for us. I’ve seen her stay strong in hard times and give to others even when she couldn’t afford to. She’s the sweetest person but has enough spice to where you know not to try her. I’ve learned so much about strength, faith, and kindness from my mom.
