Meet Trailblazer Denise Vo, Caitlyn Vo, and Karen Vo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Vo, Caitlyn Vo, and Karen Vo.

Denise, Caitlyn, and Karen, please share your story with us.
The story starts with the youngest one, Denise. She has suffered from Eczema since birth and growing up, she was constantly asking us to scratch her. As much as we didn’t want to… we couldn’t say no to the baby of the family. Back in the day, there was very little known about Eczema. Honestly, for a while, we just thought Denise liked the feeling of getting scratched and we’d blame her flare-ups on her unwillingness to not scratch. And then came a period where things got very severe. Her eyes would swell to the point of being shut and the crevices in her arms and areas behind her knees would be raw and bleeding. At that point, we knew we had to take her to see a dermatologist. She was then diagnosed with Eczema and we didn’t understand fully what it was. All we knew was that it was a skin disease and it was incurable. She was prescribed steroid ointments and that was that.

Fast forward a few years, Denise still asks us to scratch her, but then she also asked us to be her partners in business. She approached us with a business plan one day and warned us that she’d move forward with it whether we were interested or not because it’s something she’s passionate about, something that’s close to home. Once we heard her idea, we thought; brilliant. Turns out, it was something that was close to home to us too.

How the idea came to me? The steroid creams I’ve been using all my life has really taken its toll on my skin and years ago I decided I wanted to no longer use steroid creams and switch to natural products. One day as I was googling “new Eczema creams,” something I do on a daily basis, I thought to myself… there’s a subscription box for literally EVERYTHING. There has to be one for Eczema! To my surprise, one did not exist. I couldn’t believe it. How is that possible?! SO many people suffer from Eczema and it was that moment I knew this void had to be filled. Why did I ask my sisters? Well, simply because besides from my fellow Eczema warriors, no one would understand the struggles of Eczema more than them. Taking care of me and watching me grow up with Eczema, they’ve seen it all.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
With The Soothe Box being our first business venture, we knew that there would be many bumps in the road. However, there’s nothing we could’ve done to prepare ourselves for the number of bumps, or their nature, and I think that was one of the biggest struggles for us. Accepting that things come up and don’t always go as planned. It definitely has not been a smooth road, but like they say, nothing worth it comes easy and that’s something we are constantly reminding ourselves through this journey.

Our advice to other entrepreneurs out there – if you believe in something, go for it. Where there is passion, there is likely success. The worse thing that can happen is that you’ll fail, but at least you tried and learned from it. Keep going!

We’d love to hear more about The Soothe Box.
The Soothe Box is a monthly subscription service for sufferers of Eczema and Sensitive Skin. We work hard to find products, stress relievers, snacks and any related items to make life easier for those suffering. Being that there is no cure, the cycle of finding products is one that is both vicious and exhausting. We know this first hand. We also know first-hand that Eczema can take a toll on your mental state. Eczema isn’t just itchiness, but its sleepless nights, embarrassed human interactions, stress, anxiety, wearing long sleeves in the summer, the list goes on. We want to ensure that we’re not only focusing on skin health, but also mental health. Watching Denise grow up, we always felt for her, especially on the worst of days. We constantly did everything we could to help relieve her symptoms as it was hard for us to watch her deal with an uncontrollable itch that made her so frustrated. Now, we have the opportunity to do something that could help the entire Eczema community and that’s very special to us. When it comes down to it…that’s exactly what sets us apart — the fact that this venture comes from an organic place and is very close to our hearts.
