Meet Trailblazer Dr. Brook Sheehan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Brook Sheehan.

Dr. Brook, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My “re-birth” as I like to call it happened when I got pregnant with my daughter. I was 25, in an unhealthy marriage, and filled with anxiety. I had no sense of purpose or direction in my life and here I was about to bring a new life into the world. I was scared.

A dear friend shared some information with me about natural childbirth and it sparked my interest. After being born with a mild case of Cerebral Palsy, I feared a traumatic birthing experience and the same outcome for my baby. I followed up, joined the pregnant mama group and set out to learn all I could for the best scenario. This led me into the healing hands of chiropractic.

Chiropractic helped keep my hips aligned and in the best shape possible to have the birth I desired. But it brought so many more unexpected benefits. The migraines I had since childhood were gone and the doctors in the office spoke life into my broken soul. I didn’t realize they were doing it at the time, but shifts were happening. I began to see myself differently. I decided to see a therapist and that helped me gain the strength I needed to leave the toxic relationship.

Fast forward, a couple of years with more loving chiropractic care and therapy, I discovered that this was my calling in life. I left San Diego in April 2016 to attend Life Chiropractic College West in the SF Bay Area.

During my time there, my best friend and I started a mobile app company. After experiencing a situation where we were caught in a “pinch” during a baking session and me being crazy when it comes to wasting food, Cup O’ Sugar Inc. was born. This app allows neighbors to connect over food ingredients. Allowing them to share and request items for FREE at their fingertips. Thus, reducing the amount of food that is trashed and time saved returning to the grocery store.

Today, my passion for human connection is aligned. Chiropractic serves to connect the human body back to the intelligence that created it. Cup O’ Sugar serves to connect the individual back to its source of community.

Life is busy but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’m the healthiest and happiest I’ve ever been.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been far from a smooth road. In fact, it has been more like massive construction zones on a major highway with bumps, potholes, etc. 😊 Most of the struggles along the way had to do with my own faulty thinking and lack of belief in myself. It’s been a process to overcome that and change and it’s something that requires work every day. Staying true to yourself and giving grace when necessary is so important. Getting into chiropractic school wasn’t easy. Going through school was even harder and it tested my inner strength a lot. Creating an app when I have zero tech experience as you could imagine, was incredibly difficult. I made a lot of mistakes along the way but I also learned so much about myself.

My advice to other women on their journey – just start! Don’t wait until tomorrow, next week, or next month. Start today. You will NEVER have all the answers you need to get started. Do it anyway. Whether your goal is for business or personal, think of the one thing that you can do right now and do it. It’s so easy to fall in the trap of overwhelm and getting caught up in the details. Network, network, network. Research events, professionals, and groups in your space and put yourself out there. You never know the path that one person can pave.

Extraordinary happens over time when ordinary people stay the path of commitment. Those dreams in your heart were given to you for a reason. Don’t let people or life’s circumstances take that from you. People are always going to have their thoughts and opinions. Who cares!

Keep your headspace clear. Daily meditations, affirmations, and gratitude can go a long way and provide armor when things get rough. Find people that inspire you, people that challenge you to think differently. These can be people you listen to through podcasts, or watch on YouTube, or read books they’ve authored, or even people you can call when you need a “pick me up.”

And always remember: Life is an experience of intensity, whether incredible or difficult, it’s an opportunity to grow and evolve!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Cup O’ Sugar Inc. / Cardiff Health and Wellness – what should we know?
My work with Cup O’ Sugar consists of many things from Sales to Marketing to Promoter to Event Coordinator to everything in between. As a startup, I wear many hats to build the company and get it in the hands of users. I’m known for my ability to connect with people and enroll them into our vision. As an organization we’ve partnered with Comcast (Xfinity) in the SF Bay Area to bring the app to their respected communities and excited to do the same work in here in San Diego. I’m proud of our talented team for the impact we’re making on the environment through our efforts and the connectedness we are bringing to communities in San Diego.

At Cardiff Health and Wellness, I am an Associate Chiropractor being mentored by an incredible orchestrater of healing, Dr. Keith Roberts. Our office approach is unique. Many of the patients in our practice have undergone care with other medical professionals with little to no improvement in health and after a few treatments they report amazing results. We incorporate Functional Neurology, Applied Kinesiology, Neuro Emotional Technique, and other treatment modalities into the chiropractic adjustment and after 42 years in practice, you can imagine he’s seen a multitude of different ailments. I’m excited to be working alongside Dr. Roberts to develop my skills as a clinician even further. If you’re interested in being seen at the office, reach out and I will help you get that visit scheduled.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
Mindset! This is universal. As women, we struggle with feelings of worthiness, lack self-esteem, and doubt our own gifts and abilities. And when we do put ourselves out there, the waves of “imposter syndrome” come crashing down hard leaving us paralyzed and retreating to those familiar comfort zones.

Studies have shown that women are less likely to apply for a position that they are 90% qualified for because they believe they need to be fully qualified or not apply at all. Men, however, will apply for those same positions even if they are only 60% qualified for them because they have different brain circuits. We tend to over analyze, take less risks, and play it safe.

Personally, I believe that shifting our mindset, working on developing a healthy self-esteem, and working toward greater inner awareness can be the antidote to these problems. Our minds just like muscle need to be worked out every day to stay strong.

It’s important that we as women hold each other up, that we encourage and support one another, and we give each other grace and compassion. We are already too hard ourselves as is. Let’s band together and break these barriers.
