Meet Trailblazer Janette Jacinto

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janette Jacinto.

Janette, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was a little girl, I always knew I wanted to become a Makeup Artist. It took me some time to actually go after my dreams. I’m a mom to 4 kids so it’s really tough finding time for myself. In 2012, I decided to go back to school to pursue my dream but I couldn’t afford it. I told myself that I was going to work until I was able to pay for school. In the meantime, I watched YouTube tutorials and learned new makeup techniques. In 2016, I finally made the decision to go back to school. It was a perfect time, my two oldest kids were in school, my youngest had just turned 4 and my husband had a pretty good job. I was also a stay at home mom before enrolling in school. It was hard for me to leave my 4 years old and not be able to be there for my older kids, but I knew I had to make sacrifices especially because I didn’t want my dream to slip away. I enrolled at Bellus Academy in August of 2016 and started school in November 2016. I took the Master Makeup Artistry class. One of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I got pregnant a month into school. Getting pregnant wasn’t in my plans but things happen for a reason. I was told my career would be over because of my pregnancy. Despite all the negative comments I received, I still pushed through and stayed positive.

I graduated in March of 2017. I was finally a certified Makeup Artist. I had finally checked off a goal from my list. After I graduated, I passed out some business cards and got a couple clients while pregnant. I had my baby in August of 2017 and since then, I’ve taken a year off from furthering my career. I told myself that once my baby turns 1 I will get back to building my clientele. I’ve started passing out my business cards and I’ve started to post more makeup related pictures to my Instagram. Little by little, I’m feeling closer to getting my career going. It helps to have a great support system. My husband, kids, and my family are my biggest supporters. If you have a dream or a goal and don’t know if you should pursue it, well you should. It feels great to have finally made my dream a reality. Always go for your dreams! You have nothing to lose.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like I’ve said, I’m a wife and a mom to 4 kids. I had to set some priorities aside to be able to pursue my dream. I also had to keep my head up and stay focus though all the negative comments.

My advice to other women out there is to never lose focus of your dreams. Don’t overthink it and just fo for it.

We’d love to hear more about Makeup by Jay.
At the moment I pretty much do makeup for any type of event. I’m trying to get my name out there since I’m just starting out.

My goal is to work with brides. Bridal makeup has always had my heart. To be a part of a woman’s special day is something beautiful. My main focus is on that and I hope to achieve it.

I know there’s a lot of makeup artist out there and what sets me apart from them is my dedication. I put my heart into it. I took the time to learn so I can be a great MUA.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I think one of the biggest barriers today in female leadership is support from other women. There are so many artists out there in this makeup industry, we have to support and empower each other and not tear one another a part. We all have to work together. When women support one another, great things happen.
