Meet Trailblazer Jessica Bolton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Bolton.

Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I had always wanted to be a fashion designer. I had considered majoring in Apparel and Textile Design in college but I was discouraged by well-meaning adults in my life, saying that I would never make a decent living if I went that route. I then pursued an interest in psychology. After obtaining my doctorate, I returned to my interests in fashion design by making hats, which were influenced by music festivals and Burning Man where the community encourages self-expression.

Has it been a smooth road?
Building a brand is not easy, but I have had a lot of support from the community. I do a lot of collaborations with other artisans and talents who are interested in cross-promotion. I think that it’s important to remember that a brand is not just a logo and a product — it’s built upon the relationships you cultivate.

We’d love to hear more about That Dome Piece.
There are a lot of artisans out there making festival hats, and some really good ones, too. What sets my brand apart is that I only work with vintage hats through a process of upcycling, which involves searching for the perfect hat that is in good condition, restoring hats, and adding the right touch to transform it into something new. Because the hat has had a life before I find it (or two or three), I think it comes with a different energy than that of a new product. I often wonder where it has been before it finds me and ultimately it’s new owner.

Which women have inspired you in your life?
I am inspired by many of the women with whom I surround myself. When I was living in New York City, a friend of mine started a women’s group where we set goals around what we wanted to manifest in our lives and give and receive support around how to achieve those goals. When I relocated to San Diego approximately three years ago, I started a chapter of that same women’s group here, and every single one of the women that is in the group inspires me on a daily basis. I also have some pretty amazing female friends who constantly inspire me and my creations.
