Meet Trailblazer Katherine Winters

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Winters.

Katherine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started yoga when I was 19. I had Lyme disease, eating disorders, anxiety, and depression and had just lost my father to cancer. I was desperately looking for help beyond the typical western medical system. Yoga healed me.

Through a twice a week practice my Lyme disease disappeared, then my relationship to food began to shift, eventually, my depression and anxiety became manageable and eventually, I went off medication completely. Some of these changes took place immediately, while others it took several years to reprogram my body and mind. It was because of these long-lasting changes that made me commit to becoming a yoga and meditation teacher. I have been studying yoga, physiology, shamanism, energy healing, sound therapy, essential oils, and different styles of massage therapy for the last 16 years to help me become the best yoga and massage therapist I can be.

Eventually, my husband and I decided to open up our own place and in 2016 Samsara Wellness Center was born. We provide multiple forms of healing to our community. We offer yoga, breathing practices and mediation with the focus on rehabilitation injuries, coping with trauma and healing from anxiety and depression. We also take yoga out into our community and into local businesses and schools helping people from all walks of life access this incredible practice. We offer table and Thai massage therapy where each service is customized for the client. We offer sacred art tattooing; tattooing to heal, protect and inspire. We offer talk therapy with yoga and nutritional coaching too.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road was not always smooth or easy. It is tough navigating how to set up a business, deal with taxes, employees , and maintain a full time massage and yoga teaching practice. The first year we worked about 7 days a week. The second year we started having one full day off. Navigating the set up of a business isn’t so hard, but keeping it running is!

I never realized how much time I would spend behind a computer dealing with emails, software set up, payroll, accounting…. at first I hated it, but now after time to create a good system and finding the right accountant, I really enjoy it. One aspect of the business that I was not prepared for was how difficult it is to find the right people. In the beginning I felt a lot more trusting when I interviewed people. I figured, why would anyone lie about their qualifications or their work ethics?

After going though a few people I realized its ok for me to ask as many questions as I wanted and I started figuring out which questions I needed to ask. This is my business and its important for me to find the right person to represent it. On top of my long questionaire in the interview and I have to see them in action before they will ever be considered to work with us. Everyone is put on a 30 day trial period too. I had to gain a lot of confidence in myself to be able to do run a business with all its working parts. Its tough, but I have found…. so am I!

We’d love to hear more about Samsara Wellness Center.
We specialize in working with people with physical injuries and people who suffer from anxiety, depression and trauma. In our community no other yoga studio takes this approach so it helps to set us apart. Yoga for us is about healing body, mind and spirit.

We educate on what the practice of yoga is doing to your nervous system and brain chemistry. Then through specific poses and breathing techniques we learn how to heal our physical and mental maladies.

We go out into our community to teach classes too. We have been at our local farmers markets, art museums, and a few other businesses. This year we got a grant that will help our community yoga grow exponentially! We will be going into our LGBTQ center, vet hall, libraries and some organizations that deal with domestic abuse and foster care children.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Have a support system. It could be your mom, your best friend or your business partner. Have someone who has your back but hopefully can also tell you when you are straying off your original mission statement or making a bad decision.

When you find the right staff treat them really, really well. Nothing is possible without the help of a team. Let them know how much they mean to you. Make sure to take time off. You might not always get a regular day off in the beginning, so plan little trips here and there to recharge. Its ok to grow slowly.
