Meet Trailblazer Kitty Blincoe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kitty Blincoe.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Soul Whisperer, credentialed Yogini and cancer survivor. AromaReiki Master, motivational speaker and a yoga teacher trainer based in San Deigo, CA.

I’m a free spirit whose passion is helping others lighten their load through Awareness.

MY MISSION is blending Eastern and Western modalities for a global mentality on wellness, daily life, and contentment.

An ex-Fashion Exec, after many “mental moments” on and off the mat, YOGA & MEDITATION has transformed me from a Type A Personality to a “Recovering” Type A Personality.

I founded Sanctuary Z, a Sleep, Stretch & Stress Management space located near Carlsbad Village, after moving to San Diego from the NYC/tri-state area two years ago. After living and traveling all over the world, I knew right away San Diego was mine forever home. I also knew that I needed to continue sharing life management tools and coping techniques to empower peoples’ Success through Tranquility.

It is my life’s work to help people understand that stress compounds over time and can be dangerous, even deadly. There are ways to counter insomnia and there is a way out of feeling overwhelmed by the daily rat race. Your rat race could be kids, work, coping with a disease or even being overwhelmed with caregiving. In addition to empowering people going through challenging times to find some solitude and pain management, the techniques and courses I teach also complement an athlete’s training program. If someone wants to go from Type A to Zzzzz or simply keep their mind and life refreshed and focused – I’m their gal!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Having emergency surgery for a metastasizing tumor I was unaware of while on a business trip to NYC was obviously a major life-changing event. One day, I was on our seasonal photoshoot, the next day, I was in the hospital for 10 days and not going back home to LA for eight weeks. It was the catalyst for where I am today. I had never done yoga or meditated previously to being diagnosed with cancer.

Single, living an expensive lifestyle with a high pressured (but “dream”) job in fashion at the time of my diagnosis and surgery – it was a big wake up call to my life being out of balance. I grew up a competitive figure skater and had the mentality of “no pain, no gain” ingrained into my thought process. So, I looked at difficult, turmoil or stressful situations as challenges to conquer. This is a helpful mentality – to a point. Stress is needed and acceptable physically and emotionally – to a point. When someone continually goes over the tipping point (which is often the case today in our culture), stress becomes counterproductive.

My advice for women (and men) is to know your tipping point and be mindful of it. Carve out time to unwind – really UNWIND – physically, emotionally and spiritually. An NFL star player is not at his maximum output 365/24/7 and we can’t be either. Having a coffee or watching tv might be less than running around, but it is still not completely unplugging in order to listen inwards. Learn when to say yes and when to say no… and to do that we need to be really attuned to our basic needs and what fuels our Soul. It does not mean give up your day job, especially if you have others counting on you, and run off to Costa Rica – but it might mean observing what is not working and making some gradual, subtle, sustainable changes. Or it might mean making a big change – everyone is different. I advise asking: “How does my life look when comparing it to the Wheel of Wellness?”

My other advice specifically regarding being a yoga and meditation teacher is to take off the rose-colored glasses when it comes to the reality of making a full-time income only teaching. It is a very fulfilling and blessed opportunity to guide others to wellness, but it takes many years, study and training to command enough income to survive on your own if it is the only “job” you are planning to do – especially in Southern California. Last I heard there are 3 new yoga teachers for every 1 new student. When I was in fashion design school back in NYC, one of my teachers told us “If you want to work in fashion, be prepared to do other jobs until you work your way up”. I feel the yoga industry in America today is similar.

I don’t want others to have the 911 experience I had and that is why I do what I do today.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Sanctuary Z – what should we know?
It is my hope and intention to assist people in learning how to empower themselves to skillful living which equates into better health through mindfulness techniques, developing life coping skills and reducing stress – one breath, one moment, one experience at a time. To be connected to their body so that they can be connected to their Self, their Soul, and their community.

My specialties are sleep, stretch and stress management courses, workshops, luxury vacation-style retreats, classes, one on ones and semi-private sessions that focus on skillful living. I’m a Soul Whisperer known for helping people discover their path to greater tranquility. I’m also known for my “mesmerizing voice” which is why my Art of Relaxation(r) ~ Yoga Nidra sleep meditations are so beloved. I’m a teacher’s teacher having created ReBoot: AromaReiki + Restorative(r) Yoga Teacher Training as well as The Art of Relaxation: Yoga Nidra + Meditation(r) Teacher Training. These are modules for yoga teachers and allied health professionals and qualify for Yoga Alliance CE credits.

Fall 2018, I will also be offering an evidenced-based 8-week course that has been through 5 clinical trials to date with both cancer and fibromyalgia patients. I am the only certified teacher in California south of Santa Rosa. The course blends “the art and science of skillful living” and is called Yoga of Awareness. It is not “yoga” as most people think of the word. It is truly a life-changing course and beginners are welcome.

I am most proud of inspiring people to realize that they are not trapped and they can change; that in the midst of the most chaotic moment there is a way to stay tranquil. It takes awareness and the support and help of a professional (often several over time) – but you can teach an old dog new tricks!! It is priceless when someone tells you they are off their antidepressants or they can sleep consistently or they were able to not make the same circular decision that is unproductive and that they no longer want to make.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
There are no barriers – only “pockets of possibility” as Sean Achor of The Happiness Advantage says. Where there is a will there is a way.
