Meet Trailblazer Lauren Bailey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Bailey.

Lauren, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m 17 years old and I am a body painter, special effects, and beauty makeup artist. I started my makeup journey the Halloween of 2015. It was Halloween night, and I was home alone. I remember not owning much makeup at all, but enough. I was scrolling through my Instagram feed, and saw a half skull Halloween makeup look. The only resources I could find were a black and white eyeliner. and with the little tools I had, I tried to create my own version of that look. I ended up falling IN LOVE with the art of being able to transform myself into whatever creature I desired. After two years of practicing, working as a makeup artist for Six Flag’s New Englands Fright Fest, becoming a freelance makeup artist for all occasions, posting on my business Instagram, and watching countless YouTube tutorials, I decided to start my own YouTube channel to really showcase my passion. Starting a YouTube channel was not easy in the least. Gaining the confidence to talk in front of a camera, learning about videography and photography, all from scratch, and saving up money to buy all the fancy lights, audio, and a new camera was quite the adventure. I love to grow, connect with people, and learn new things about this industry every day.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far, I have had a pretty smooth road with little bumps. I am extremely blessed to have parents who help, and support me every step of the way. The main thing I truly have struggled with is my anxiety. My anxiety slowly started to show itself in middle school and came in full force during high school. I never really had social anxiety, but more of a mental anxiety. When I felt anxious and nervous I would sit down and paint myself for hours. It was like a happy place, and the best kind of therapy/medicine I ever tried. It was like all my worries disappeared. It felt like I left the place that had all my worries, and I could make myself into someone totally different temporarily. Since I started doing makeup, my anxiety has gone down drastically. I learned how to deal with anxiety by finding myself and my passion, and also connecting with some of the most amazing and supportive people I’ve ever met on the internet. I don’t think I really qualify to give advice to any young women starting since I am only 17, but if you were first starting my biggest piece of advice is to just be yourself. People love authenticity and really gravitate toward people that are unapologetically themselves.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Glamorous Massacre – what should we know?
I am a body painter, special effects, and beauty makeup artist. I use body paint to paint my face and chest, I create different prosthetics that can totally change the shape and look of my face, and do regular beauty makeup. I’m most proud of being entirely self-taught. I think what sets me apart from others is my work ethic, my personal drive, and how hard I’ve worked to be in the position I am at my age.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I am a self-taught makeup artist, but what really taught me everything was watching YouTube videos/tutorials. It’s taught me everything I’ve needed to know about shading, highlighting, how well different paints perform, how to use certain special effects products, how to give any painting realism or make it look 3d, etc. Different YouTubers that have made me laugh while teaching me so much are Jordan Hanz, Madeyewlook, Glam and Gore, RawBeautytKristi, Ellimacs Sfx, etc. Instagram and Pinterest have given me a lot of inspiration when I feel like I’m in a creative rut or just to give me the motivation to create.
