Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Myers.
Liz, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Ever since I was a young girl, I felt the need to ease suffering in those around me. I knew that the world of psychology and social work was the path for me. I went through the formal educational system and earned my Bachelors and Masters degree in Psychology and Social Work. During my graduate program, I became fascinated by what most consider to be alternative healing modalities that focus on balancing the mind, body, and spirit. I decided to learn as much as I could about Tai Chi, Mindfulness, Meditation, Yoga, and Life Coaching.
My journey to become an entrepreneur and independent contractor in this work came from feeling blocked with my ability to make positive changes for clients in the non-profit sector. The emphasis on diagnostics and the stream of endless paperwork made it tough to feel as though there was enough time to meet one’s client with ample time and compassion. I found myself becoming burnt out in the non-profit world time and time again, and I knew I had to carve my own path.
Like many entrepreneurs, I ran my own wellness business, which was called “Rooted Living Wellness” at the time (now it’s called “Liz Myers Life”), while I also worked for a non-profit business. It was overwhelming, to say the least, and I knew I needed to take that leap and go out on my own, even if it meant earning less money for awhile.
Above all, my personal battle with overcoming cancer and other physical ailments drove me to discover the dire need to take care of myself while I cared for others. Paving my own path as an entrepreneur in the field of health and healing was the only way I could find balance with my ability to thrive in this work. Mindfulness and mind/body healing modalities gave me the tools I needed to heal myself, and sharing them with others is the greatest gift I can give with my time here on this earth. Time is the only true gift we have and spending it daily to support others on their life’s journey is the only path I want to continue to walk upon.
Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth roads are hard to come by these days. My biggest hurdle has been my need to discover how to be an amazing practitioner as well as a smart and savvy business woman. Being a practitioner and working with patients comes natural to me, however selling my services is a different story. Learning the skills necessary to run a successful business and put myself out there has taken time. I’ve learned that you’ve got to be assertive and find trusted connections that work well. Above all else, I’ve learned that you’ve got to be assertive. Sing it with me, “BE ASSERTIVE”! Speak up and deliver your message compassionately and with conviction. Don’t let yourself get bogged down with questioning your abilities and confidence. Believe in yourself and your message. Get support from your fellow entrepreneurs. Seek out empowerment groups and business supports. Ask questions, be bold, rediscover and strengthen your self-confidence time and time again, watch inspirational talks, find quality accountability partners, do your homework, reach out, accept that being an entrepreneur is a calling and it will include ups and downs with income and clients. Provide the best ethically based services you can and find out who your cheerleaders and compadres are and who simply are not.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am most known for my soulful singing voice and intuitive abilities. I love to provide sound healing yoga and meditation classes as well as private empowerment coaching sessions. I absolutely love teaching and coaching! I’ve finally discovered that the core of all of my offerings begins with my skills as a teacher and a counselor. In all the work that I do, I find that I can best support others with my compassion as a counselor coupled with my experiences as a teacher and group facilitator. This combination provides quite a safe, supportive and empowering experience.
I serve several different populations; however, I specialize in serving female entrepreneurs to gain the knowledge, confidence, and courage it takes to succeed on their path. I also focus much of my healing work on supporting women and men to slow down, relax, manage stress better and heal health conditions they may be facing. The core of my work and message rests upon people feeling empowered and balanced in their daily living.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I have seen an uprise in the exposure and encouragement of female entrepreneurs in San Diego. I’ve seen a change in the culture with women coming together to support each other to succeed as entrepreneurs. I find this more collaborative approach to female entrepreneurship has opened up doors for many women who were going at it on their own until they discovered another motivated woman or women to join forces with. During my two years as the founder and director of the Women of Wonder Networking group, I discovered just how powerful and uplifting it is to simply bring female entrepreneurs together in a room to share wisdom, support each other while they find new connections for success.
The only barrier that can truly get in a female entrepreneur’s way is the belief that someone else is better at what you do. Each of us is unique, and it is your unique way of how you provide your service that sets you apart from someone else (male or female). Be yourself and move forward confidently and nobody can tear you down.
