Today we’d like to introduce you to Mai Jill Tran.
Mai Jill, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my business 5 years ago when I was furlough from a full-time job to working only 3 days a week. I needed an extra income to help pay the bills. I’ve always been a creative and art person, so I decided to utilize my artistic skills. I’ve always love lettering and calligraphy, and I noticed that it was making a comeback. I started to help a friend with their wedding invitation then another friend and another and another and before I knew it, I found myself starting my business, Oh Mai! Art Creations (aka OMAC). I started with small artwork, greeting cards and invitations. Now, I offer custom calligraphy, paper goods, signage and design services.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road (still isn’t) and filled with many struggles along the way like my fear of failure. I lacked the confidence to believe in my artwork to put it out there in the universe. I was so scared of everyone judging and criticizing that I inhibited myself to flourish as an artist and entrepreneur.
I, also, struggled with balancing my day job, business and personal life. I still have a full-time job as a Graphic Designer & Quality Controller, so after a very long work day, I have to rally myself to put in more hours in the evening to work on custom orders. Plus, I try to maintain a healthy lifestyle and stay fit with running, yoga and cardio hip hop classes. So, it can be very exhausting to balance it all, but one day at a time. Honestly, I don’t know how people with children make it work. Haha! Kudos to them! *insert high five*
I have two pieces of advice. My first advice fail, fail, fail. Because it means you’re trying, you’re doing, you’re making things happen and you’re turning that wheel. I firmly believe that to be truly successful, you must have failures too. It goes hand in hand. My second advice is to pursue a career or path that gets you excited and happy! Like genuinely happy… that makes your soul smile. Something that challenges you to grow personally and professionally. Never stop learning. Okay, that’s technically three bits of advice. 🙂
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Oh Mai! Art Creations – what should we know?
I am a Calligrapher + Designer with a small business called Oh Mai! Art Creations (aka OMAC) that offers custom calligraphy and design services. Whether it’s envelope addressing or place cards, vintage wooden pieces or chalkboard art, or an entire wedding invitation suite, OMAC creates personalized artwork that reflects each client’s story. Every creation is carefully and thoughtfully designed from scratch — never computer-generated. At OMAC, the goal is simple: to translate one’s ideas, style and vision into original art that meets their needs.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I think women are excellent problem-solvers and multi-taskers. While some may say women are “too caring” or “too emotionally invested”. I think that is what makes us great leaders. We are very resilient, dedicated and determined when we set our goals and agenda.
