Meet Trailblazer Maria Serrano

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Serrano.

Maria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Being born into the beauty industry I felt, early on, that this was my calling. With my mother owning her own salon, I found my passion for nails and cosmetics at the age of 14. I worked on everyone from my mom, aunts, friends and knew without a question this was what I was meant to do. I graduated from high school and enrolled in beauty school a week later. I have been in the industry for over 20 years and I am constantly scouring the internet and social media, still learning new techniques, focusing on improving my skills and process every day.

I pride myself on sanitation and creating the perfect set of nails for all of my clients. The passion that I have in creating nails is amplified by teaching the process to those willing to learn. My knowledge of acrylic and hard gel, combining them with all mediums of products, if it shines I encapsulate it. I love combining glitter with colored acrylic and I prefer to sculpt all my sets of nails.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With any position in this industry, it seems like a jaunting, endless worry of building a clientele. For me, it was difficult at the beginning with so many nail salons on every corner. I did step away from the industry for many years to raise my children but always kept my license up knowing one day, maybe. It was about 4 1/2 years ago, I decided to jump back in with both feet. It was extremely difficult and at times discouraging. It’s was my love for nails and determination to be well rounded, educated nail tech that kept me going. Being determined and always willing to learn has put me in the position I am in today as a professional and educator.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Nail Junqee – what should we know?
I specialize in sculpted hard gel and acrylic. I love to encapsulate anything that sparkles. Adding 3d flowers and Swarovski stones always seem to finish off the nails. Sanitation is a huge part of my service as well. I feel what sets me apart from other nail professionals is my style, experience within their visit and relationship with each client.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I feel in today’s social media world, that it’s a great time to be a nail tech. It showcases each of our styles and what we are known for. If you put yourself out there with your product and knowledge the opportunities are endless.

I’ve been going to Maria for years. I like simple and she does my nail perfectly. I’ve never broken a nail or had any problems. She is SO creative and talented!! One day I’ll venture and do something crazy, but I’ll leave that to all the youngins.

Congrat Maria! I see you going to great places!
