Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Held.
Mariah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my journey in the beauty industry in 2012. After watching my older sister achieve so much success as a hair stylist in the industry, I knew I HAD to be a part of it! So many people, including members of my own family, discouraged the idea and thought of the beauty industry as a “poor man’s” job or as a back-up plan for the uneducated. Pretty much like, “Well, she wasn’t good or smart enough for anything else, so she decided to be a starving artist working min wage at a strip mall salon.” (JOKES ON THEM!) Those sorts of thoughts and opinions are what kept me hungry and eager to prove them wrong!
Straight out of high school, I jumped head first into cosmetology school. While in school, I also worked a full-time job at Sephora. Basically worked that 7-day a week, endless-hour day hustle! That same hustle continued outside of school when I got my first job as a booth rent stylist and assistant at a local salon. In just under a year, I was able to build a full clientele, and after my second year, I was so busy I hired my first assistant. It was then that I discovered my passion for teaching and helping build other stylists. I realized that I wanted to help empower other women to achieve success and growth in the beauty industry! It is 100% achievable to make a six-figure income, go on regular vacations, work only three days a week, and still have time to pick up your kids every day after school. You CAN have it all, and that is what I want to help others realize.
I am so blessed to be a part of GURU Salon as the education director. I feel like this is the perfect platform for me to embark on my goals to help other stylists. Right now, I work directly with our new talent in our assistant program. It’s so rewarding to watch a bright-eyed, fresh out of beauty school stylist blossom into the successful professional they were born to be! I can’t wait to discover what my position and passion will evolve into!
Has it been a smooth road?
I cannot tell you how many times I have gone running to my sister crying and feeling like I should just quit. At times, you will feel discouraged, but the best advice I can give a brand new stylist is, FIND A MENTOR! Someone you are extremely comfortable with too! Someone you can cry to when you are feeling like a failure after getting your first unhappy client. Someone you can call when you are in a panic and don’t know what color formula will work for your client. Someone to take you under your wing and tell you to screw the haters, tell you-you are a badass, and reassure you know exactly what you are doing! You have to develop some pretty thick skin in this industry, and that can definitely take a while. Find someone to help you build it up!
We’d love to hear more about GURU Salon.
I am a hairstylist specializing in blonding and extensions at GURU Salon in Temecula, CA. Besides being a master at my craft, thanks to a massive amount of furthering education, my guest experience is what truly sets me apart from other stylists. It is my goal to create a personal bond with each of my guests, along with customized color, and precision haircut, so they leave my chair feeling beautiful both on the inside and the outside.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
It is hard work. Plain and simple. No matter what industry you choose to be a part of, realize that you will be pouring blood, sweat, and (lots of) tears into it if you want to be successful. Great things aren’t achieved by accident.
